‘Ghostbusters’ Reboot Wakes Up a 32-Year Dormant Franchise with an Impressive Opening Weekend Box Office Performance!

It also turned out that the all-female “Ghostbusters” reboot is just part of the new franchise. There is an animated “Ghostbusters” movie that will be told from the perspective of a ghost and an animated TV series set in the year 2050 to be called “Ghostbusters: Ecto Force,” both in development at Sony Pictures Animation. In addition, there will be more “Ghostbusters” movie along the way.

Reitman explained that it is a long-term deal that came as a result of complex negotiations when he decided he was not going to direct the new “Ghostbusters” movie.

After collaborating with and directing Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis on the first two “Ghostbusters” films, Reitman said the creative team cut a deal with Sony Pictures that was basically good for them and not for the continuation of the franchise.

He said that they had to be unanimously happy with everything to get any project done. It is also one of the reasons why nothing was ever done in 20 years.

Each of the key creatives received a veto right, including over what the studio might want to do. Ramis had died and Reitman said Murray was always reluctant, so he negotiated a deal on everyone’s behalf to make them participants forever on any future projects.

He set up a production company called Ghost Corps with Sony to find ways to capitalize on the “Ghostbusters” franchise through other projects.
