‘Frozen 2’ Voice Actress Idina Menzel Does Not Believe that a Gay Elsa Would Happen But Happy that the Conversations About it is Happening

Unlike her sister Princess Anna, Queen Elsa of Arendelle did not have a romantic pair in the most successful animated movie of all time, “Frozen,” when it was released to global theaters in November 2013.

When Disney confirmed that “Frozen 2” is a go, there were petitions from members of LGBT communities asking the entertainment conglomerate to consider Elsa’s character as gay and that she should be given a girlfriend.

There were also oppositions to the petition saying that Queen Elsa should stick to being a lady and Disney should focus instead on giving her a male romantic pair for “Frozen 2.”

Actress Idina Menzel, who lent her voice to Queen Elsa in “Frozen” and the short film “Frozen Fever” and will be doing it again for “Frozen 2,” says that she is actually surprised of the calls to give her character a girlfriend in the sequel.

The Tony-winning Broadway star said that she was really happy that it was her “Frozen” character that sparked the conversation, details the Huffington Post.

The 45-year-old singer-actress said that she was surprised a bit because the movie is Disney and that she is just excited that the conversations about Elsa being gay are happening.

She said that she can’t promise what is going to happen to Queen Elsa in “Frozen 2” but she expressed skepticisms that Disney would head that way.

Menzel earned a lot of LGBT admirers and supporters even before “Frozen” when she performed lesbian characters in “Rent” and “Wicked.” It was actually her bisexual performance as artist Maureen in “Rent” that earned her a Tony Award nomination.

More freedom to the creative minds

Meanwhile, Kristen Bell, the actress who lent her voice to Princess Anna in “Frozen” and “Frozen Fever” and will do the same again in “Frozen 2,” said that it is good that it is taking the sequel some time before it comes out to theaters.

She explained that “Frozen 2” is certainly not the type of movie  that needs to meet a two-to-three year time gap from its predecessor film. She believes the long time in between the two movies is a good decision because it means that the creative minds would have more freedom to create the best story possible for the sequel, reports Cinema Blend.

Bell said that “Frozen 2” does not need to be rushed, as fans will still be eager to see the sequel even if it comes out years from now.

She said in a recent interview that the production people are not rushing the script because they have the luxury not to rush. The actress added that whether the movie comes out tomorrow or in five years, everyone will still be excited to watch it. She explained that the production team is making “Frozen 2” as perfect as it needs to be and they are just on call to start recording whenever it is ready to do so.

Plenty of weird storylines on the rumor mills

Just leave it to the rumor mills to speculate on the possible plotlines of “Frozen 2,” the sequel to the most successful animated film of all time, and trolls will come up with plenty of ridiculous, albeit weird, storylines.

The latest rumors about “Frozen 2” are saying that it would feature a sibling rivalry between Queen Elsa and Princess Anna.

It can be recalled that there was a bit of sibling rivalry featured in “Frozen” when Elsa decided to run off to the snow mountain but not because she is angry with her sister but more because she wanted to protect her and the whole of Arendelle for her uncontrollable powers of turning everything around her into ice.

The absurd portion of the rumors lies with reports saying that there is also a possibility that Princess Anna would steal the throne of Arendelle from her sister.

The same speculations are saying that Anna will abandon her sweet and adorable image to become the sequel’s big bad. Accordingly, Anna will become jealous of her sister and take extreme measures to gain Elsa’s powers and reign over the Kingdom of Arendelle.

frozen-2

Based on the character of Princess Anna and the hint previously stated by co-writers and co-directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee that they are looking for “Frozen 2” to impart a very strong message to children, it seems unlikely for Anna to become the sequel’s big bad.

As if going further to the extreme, the same rumors are saying that Anna would even resort to killing off Olaf, something which is no longer Disney-like considering that both Anna and Olaf are fan-favorite characters.
