‘Frozen 2’ Needs to Highlight Queen Elsa’s Magic Powers to Sustain Children’s Interest

While the sequel to the most successful animated film in history “Frozen” will not be hitting worldwide theaters before 2018, there has been so much speculations about the plot and possible new characters of “Frozen 2.”

What is certain thus far is that Queen Elsa, Princess Anna, Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven will be back as the main characters of the film. Other than those five, reports of new characters coming along are merely rumors and subject to the confirmation or denial of either Disney or co-directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee.

According to Moviepilot, it is important for Disney to ensure that Queen Elsa must maintain her magic powers in the upcoming sequel to sustain children’s interest, particularly the young girls.

The outlet believes that one of the major draws of “Frozen” is how Elsa has seemingly become a superhero who lost her way initially but come into her senses at the right time. And that is also the reason why Queen Elsa’s song in the movie “Let It Go” is still being crooned by young girls from practically all parts of the world nearly two years after the movie was shown late in 2013.

So if Disney wants to have that same kind of legacy for “Frozen 2,” the movie needs to have that superhero power for Queen Elsa amplified a couple of notches up because young girls love superpower princesses and queens as much as young boys like superhero stuff.

Disney should also pick up a neat lesson in its history because hardly any sequel to its animated films has gone better than its predecessor. Now, the film company is attempting to break that curse not just with “Frozen” but also in other successful movies whose sequels are reportedly in the works including “The Incredibles,” “Finding Nemo,” and “Big Hero 6.”

Queen Elsa’s love interest

As regards the likely plot of “Frozen 2,” it has been rumored that focus of the movie will be on Queen Elsa and her new love interest.

It can be recalled that Elsa did not have a romantic partner in the first movie as it was only Princess Anna and Kristoff who were the film’s love pair.

Reports have it that Queen Elsa will rightfully get her man on “Frozen 2” but everything is speculation at this point. First, there was a report that it could be Prince Hans who will be returning as a better person.

Then there was a report that Elsa might be paired with another female character because it will turn out that she is gay, a rumor which Disney would not likely touch on given its sensitive nature, despite the fact that same-sex marriage has already been made legal by the US Supreme Court just recently.

And finally, there is the report about Olaf turning into a prince or something to become Elsa’s new love interest, which was also mentioned by the Ecumenical News in a recent report.

Many fans of “Frozen” are pushing Olaf to become the love interest of Queen Elsa since the snow character embodies true love and selflessness in the first film. But, of course, Olaf’s character should be refreshed and modified, and that there should be a twist in his character if he is to become Queen Elsa’s love interest for the sequel.

Given Disney’s penchant for animated melodramatics, the best bet would be the third report about Olaf being the likely love interest of Elsa. After all, she was the one who created her and the writers can surely cook up a back story how Elsa was able to create Olaf and put a spin on a possible love angle from there.

‘Frozen’ musical

There are reports that in order to keep the young fans busy while production for “Frozen 2” is in the works, Disney is now cooking up a “Frozen” Broadway musical very soon. While no dates have been specified thus far, but it looks likely that it will come out either next year or at the latest 2017.

The idea is not only to sustain fan interest on “Frozen” but also to drumbeat and further heighten the excitement for “Frozen 2” when it hits worldwide theaters on 2018.

Disney has yet to release any specific details about the reported “Frozen” Broadway musical but if it is true, it would sure to raise further awareness on the sequel and thus almost ensure its success.

With the resounding success of “Frozen” late in 2013 which eventually became the most successful animated film in history, any attempt to make a sequel out of it will surely be under extreme pressure to either match its level or better yet, surpass it.
