Floyd Mayweather Jr. Will Have One More Bout After Manny Pacquiao Before He Retires for Good

Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s fight with Manny Pacquiao on May 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada will not be Money’s swan song.

Apparently, he will be going for a 49th fight, Floyd Jr. personally disclosed during a recent conversation with the media after his training session. In the event that he overcomes Pacquiao and he wins his very last match, he would retire with a perfect 49-0 record, which shall equal the ring record of the great Rocky Marciano. That has been the quest of Floyd Mayweather Jr. all along.

Money said that the upcoming fight with the Filipino boxing icon is the fifth of a six-bout contract he signed with broadcaster Showtime. He says that he will just complete the deal and will not make any attempt for a renewal, notes the Mirror.

No longer enjoys boxing

In addition to completing his commitment he signed with Showtime, Mayweather also disclosed that he no longer enjoys boxing like he used to.

He told the media at the final open training session that his last fight was in September 2014 and he realized that he no longer enjoyed it like he once did. He added that boxing has become a business and a job to him, no longer a passion.

Mayweather said that he goes to the gym, he trains, and he knows what to do. He recalls the time when it was fun but he already reached the point where he is really over all the fun stuff in the sport.

When asked about Pacquiao, instead of the reckless jabs he just delivered days before, Mayweather said that the Pacman is a future of Hall-of-Famer and so is he.

Last opponent

While Floyd Mayweather Jr. did not disclose any name for his likely last opponent, he did say that after May 2, his last fight would most likely happen in September. After September, he would go on to finally retire from the sport for good. Reports have it that Pakistan-born British boxer Amir Khan would be Mayweather’s last match but Khan has already committed to fight Kell Brooks within the next 12 months.

Should he finally retire after September, that would be the 38-year-old pound-for-pound king’s fourth retirement in eight years.

After defeating Oscar De La Hoya in May 2007, Mayweather retired and relinquished his WBC lightweight title. Two months later, he announced his fight with British boxer Ricky Hatton.

He also retired in 2008 but returned some 21 months later in May 2009 to fight Mexico’s Juan Manuel Marquez.
