Few games in the history of gaming have seen a development cycle as extensive as the one for “Final Fantasy XV”, which has reportedly been in the works for nearly ten years now. And while most fans have learned to be patient and just wait for the official announcement to eventually come, every time fresh rumors about the game start going around, discussions get revived and fans display an obviously high level of excitement. And now, according to Sony, the wait will soon be over – the game is reportedly coming this year!
While Sony didn’t exactly go out of their way to say that the game will be released in 2015, the revelation came when they showed a public report with various sales figures for their PlayStation 4 console. The list also included a release schedule for the console for this year, and in that list, “Final Fantasy XV” could be seen. The game was listed alongside “Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain”, “Bloodborne” and a few other titles as scheduled for a 2015 release.
This concludes a long stream of rumors that contradicted each other, with one side claiming that the game will soon be announced or even released, while other rumors were denying those and stating that the game is actually not going to hit the market anytime soon. Speculation was further fueled by the release of the demo along with “Final Fantasy Type-0”, but even then fans didn’t get any official announcement.
It should be noted that Sony eventually “corrected” the list and removed the 2015 scheduled date listed for the game, although it’s not clear what this means. The company hasn’t issued any official statement regarding the matter, and there are several possibilities. It’s plausible that this was simply a mistake and the game wasn’t meant to be announced, but it’s also possible that Square Enix were indeed planning to announce their new game sometimes in the coming weeks/months, and Sony were potentially spoiling their surprise.
Meanwhile, a recent job posting by Square Enix for an “online game planner” for an unknown new online game related to “FFXV” has sparked even more speculation regarding the title. Square Enix haven’t announced any online spin-offs of “Final Fantasy XV” yet, but judging by this job posting, they might be preparing something exactly like that behind the scenes. In any case, if they’re looking to hire a planner at this point, the game is probably still in a very early stage of development and won’t be ready for an announcement anytime soon. It’s not known if there are plans to release it alongside “Final Fantasy XV” itself either, or if it will just share the name.
