After the first DLC for “Fallout 4” saw so much success, players were looking forward to see what else Bethesda has in store for them. The initial previews made it seem like the first two content packages would feature relatively little in the way of new content, but “Automatron” quickly proved that false. Now, a recently released trailer for “Wasteland Workshop” gave a glimpse at the various features that are about to be added to the game, showing a lot more than most players were expecting to see.
When the DLCs were originally announced, it was implied that “Wasteland Workshop” will just feature a few additions to the settlement building feature of the game, as well as the option for setting up cage matches. However, the trailer released by Bethesda made it clear that we’re going to get lots of new toys to play around with, and the gameplay will expand significantly.
The trailer showed lots of cosmetic additions, expanding the range of options for customizing one’s settlement in an impressive way. Those who’ve been hoping to throw a little more customization in their wasteland homes will have various new pieces of furniture, lighting and decoration, including an actual taxidermy station.
Next up, the trailer showed some defensive traps, including spikes coming out of the floor and spinning blades. Players have been joking that they can live out their “Saw” dreams now, and those who’re feeling more paranoid about having their settlements invaded can now set up all sorts of intricate defenses to stop intruders.
This should work well with the recent changes to the game’s balance, especially the newly introduced Survival mode. Previously, attacks on settlements worked in a way that made traps a bit redundant, as the player had to be actively present during the attack. The system is now changing and it looks like traps will have a much more adequate purpose after this update, although of course players should still keep their laser rifles polished for those Super Mutant attacks.
Last but not least, there will now be the option to capture various Wasteland creatures and keep them as pets – including anything from a simple cat, to hostile beasts like the Mirelurk and even Deathclaws. What’s more, the player will have the option of building fighting cages and setting up matches between those creatures and their own settlers. Ever found some of your villagers to be too annoying? Drop them in a cage with a Deathclaw or two to sort them out!
It’s also claimed that the player will be able to pit the creatures themselves against one another, and it will definitely be exciting to see some of the possible matches. Hopefully the feature will be realized in a detailed way and won’t be just a small gimmick – but the trailer certainly painted it in a very good light.
“Wasteland Workshop” is coming on April 12, leaving just one more DLC to be released from the currently announced trio. “Far Harbor” is scheduled for release at some point in May, and further details will likely be revealed in the coming weeks. In addition, Bethesda are reportedly preparing the release of the “GECK”, the official set of modding tools for the game. Many players seem more excited for that than the content-based DLCs themselves, but that’s understandable – after all, all of Bethesda’s recent games have benefited heavily from user-made content, and “Fallout 3” was no exception.
