The Philippines police force has received a lot of flak for their tendency to support the drug cartels, and Duterte had previously said that the whole police force was corrupted and couldn’t be trusted with the task of fighting against the narcotics. In such a situation, the army will play a crucial role in continuing Duterte’s war against the drug.
Al Jazeera reported that the Philippine National Police was held responsible after a rogue police squad ended up killing a South Korean businessman, Jee Ick Joo. There was an immediate suspension of the anti-drugs operation of the PNP. Duterte expressed outrage at the incident and said that it was an embarrassment for the country and could have international implications.
GMA News reported that since there is a void in the system because of the expulsion of the PNP from the anti-drug war, Duterte is planning to bring back the Philippine Constabulary to help the Drug Enforcement Agency.
Ernesto Abella, the spokesman for the president, said that Duterte is contemplating on the idea and had a conference with both the AFP and the PNP. No decision has been taken yet, but it looks like the Philippine Constabulary might be reactivated soon.
Duterte had previously refused to accept claims that the PNP was corrupt and wouldn’t aid in the drug war. He had continued to extend his support even after allegations from human rights groups. However, he has realized the mistake.
