The official trailer of Season 6 of the British period drama TV series “Downton Abbey” has been released recently in time for its September 20 premiere in the United Kingdom and it is clear that the TV show is bidding its viewers goodbye.
The trailer was actually scored by Andrea Bocelli’s wail-inducing “Time to Say Goodbye” and it leaves fans no doubts about the series’ last. The 60-second video clip goes all out on closure and adds some extra melodramatic moments from some of the show’s familiar characters.
It featured emotional scenes featuring Mr. Carson, Robert Crawley, Lady Edith, Anna Bates, Lady Mary, and the Dowager Countess.
It showed Mr. Carson, played by Jim Carter, packing up a suitcase. While it is not clear whether he will be leaving Downton or simply moving into a new house, it was evident that he was sad.
There is also the meaningful short exchange between Anna Bates and Mary Crawley to top the show’s farewell hint. When Anna Bates said ‘We’ve certainly had our moments, haven’t we my Lady? A stoic Lady Mary Crawley responded matter-of-factly by saying ‘We certainly have.’
The TV show will premiere in the United States on PBS on January 23, 2016.
Closure to the TV series
Right after the Season 5 finale, it has already been made clear by series creator Julian Fellowes that Season 6 of “Downton Abbey” is to be its last
The sixth and final season of “Downton Abbey” will allow fans to receive closure with the story while getting more juicy details about the characters.
Director Gareth Neame said that Season 6 will conclude the show in a manner that will not disappoint viewers. He explained that they wanted to close the doors of Downton Abbey when it felt right and natural for the storylines to come together and when the show was still being enjoyed so much by its fans, details the Christian Post.
Neame promised that the final season of “Downton Abbey” will still be full of all the usual drama and intrigues but with the added excitement of discovering how and where they all end up.
The director hinted that there is a possibility that the series will take a movie adaptation. This was consistent with the pronouncement made by showrunner Julian Fellowes recently in an interview that “Downton Abbey” may be reborn as a movie or a play or a musical or a ballet, notes Flavorwire.
A fan-favorite character
British veteran actress Dame Maggie Smith, who plays the role of Violet Crawley, is one of the fan-favorite characters in the critically-acclaimed “Downton Abbey” because of her sharp tongue and witty one-liners that often borders on being sarcastic and outright funny.
A preview of the first episode of Season 6 of the popular TV show actually showed that Maggie Smith’s witty one-liners are very much in great shape as the show enters its sixth and final season.
Violet Crawley’s classic put-downs and witty retorts will be back right on the premiere episode of Season 6. And that is just one of the things that fans will chew on when “Downton Abbey” returns to American TV early next year.
The sixth season of “Downton Abbey” will have 1925 for a setting and it will feature Robert already considering that they are just living far too out to date with the rest of the world.
With the financial crisis looming in the horizon, there is a talk of reducing the staff at Downton with rumors of even closing shop and force the Crawleys to finally fend for themselves.
