Fans are still disappointed over the fact that “Downton Abbey” is going to end after its upcoming sixth season, but at least it looks like the producers are planning to end things on a good note and give their fans everything they could have asked for in that last round of episodes. We’re going to see various developments on the screen between some of the show’s characters, and in some cases those developments will not be exactly positive, nor happy – but it’s a necessary thing in order for the show to properly move forward.
A recently released trailer for the upcoming season 6 shed some light on what we can expect from the new episodes, and it looks like the show is going to explore various elements of its plot that were somewhat forgotten previously. The season as a whole will reflect on the fact that the show is ending, as it will be designed in a way that very much resembles “the end of an era”, according to hints.
And the characters themselves will be quite self-aware and in touch with everything happening around them, as people will very clearly see what’s coming up in their future and will try to do what they can with the resources they have available still.
There will be a heavy focus on the topic of adaptation and the ability to overcome adversity through changing in order to fit into a situation better. Robert in particular will have a lot to adapt to, and his character will undergo some major changes that will force him to finally live his life in a proper way, instead of succumbing to feelings that he should have probably pushed to the back of his mind a long time ago.
And while Robert eventually does realize the clear necessity for change, Mr. Carson will have a different opinion and will end up causing a lot of trouble through his sentiment for the past, according to the trailer. Whether or not the characters will get over their internal struggles or if they’ll need more time to properly adjust to their new realizations is a major point of discussion among fans of the show, and it’s likely going to be one of the more important points of the new season too.
Lady Mary will be a major character in the new season as well, as she will be pulling the strings of most other characters from what we can tell. Whether or not this will have any significant impact on the plot is hard to tell, but it’s becoming pretty clear that the writers want to say something specific through the character of Lady Mary and it’s looking very likely that they’re going to utilize the new season for this exact purpose. Hopefully they’re going to do it in a way that leaves fans satisfied though, as some people are quite fond of the Lady and the way she’s been involved with some other characters.
What about the future of the show? We know for a fact that there won’t be a season 7, but is it possible that we may still see our favorite characters coming back in another form? There have been rumors about that, and even though nothing specific has been said yet, fans have been keeping their eyes open as it’s definitely a possibility that should not be ignored.
