Devious Maids has gained a lot of popularity since the first episode. The producers were initially unsure about how the audience would receive the stereotyping of Latinas. After some initial hiccups, Devious Maids went on to create a huge ripple in the 10pm slot of Lifetime.
Seeing the massive popularity, runner Marc Cherry along with Brian Tanen and Ric Swartzlander, wasted no time in announcing Devious Maids Season 3. The show depicts maids working for the rich and famous in upscale Beverley Hills. The show traces their life – the drama, the emotions and the scandals.
Devious Maids has brought some names into the forefront. Stars like Roselyn Sanchez, Diana Ramirez, Ana Ortiz and Judy Reyes have become popular in every household. There is one actress who could have been part of this cast, but opted out on her own. She has since made a name for herself with the hit show on CW called Jane, The Virgin.
Yes, you guessed it right. It’s Gina Rodriguez. She is still being asked why she had rejected the hit show Devious Maids. She was offered the role of one of the hot and saucy Latina maids in the hit series and could have been part of a hugely popular cast in Devious Maids Season 3, but she refused.
Gina Rodriquez said that when she was offered the part of a maid in Devious Maids she had just finished a role in Filly Brown, a Sundance Film Festival favourite. She had portrayed the character of a young girl who becomes a hip-hop star. She had just started out and did not want her talent to be overshadowed with a sexualised role that would bring her mainstream success.
It was a personal choice Rodriquez had made for her career. It wasn’t the kind of role she was looking for, at the moment. There is no love lost as some media reports have claimed. Devious Maids Season 3, actress Judy Reyes is going to make a cameo with Rodriguez in CW’s Jane, the Virgin. Rodriquez has also worked with actress Ana Ortiz in Sleeping With the Fishes.
Devious Maids has raised quite a few eyebrows, and critics have directly lashed out at executive producer, Eva Longoria, for the stereotypical portrayal of Latinas as maids.
Rodriguez echoed this opinion by saying that Devious Maids stereotypes Mexican women and doesn’t show them in a positive light. She has also reportedly turned down another film because it showed Latinas in a negative note.
Devious Maids Season 3 has always been the brewing pot for controversy. It releases in 2015 and is sure to feature more controversy.
