Things are apparently getting heated on the set of “Criminal Minds”, and not in a good way. There has reportedly been an incident between Thomas Gibson and one of the show’s producers, culminating in physical violence and a temporary filming suspension for Gibson. However, the story didn’t end there – the incident apparently became even more dramatic as Gibson ended up getting completely fired from the show.
As can be expected, the announcement caused a major uproar in the community of “Criminal Minds” fans, and many of the show’s dedicated viewers immediately split into two camps, one defending the actions of Gibson and another condemning them. It’s not too different from what happened with “Top Gear” and Jeremy Clarkson, including fans requesting that the actor’s contract is reinstated.
This doesn’t seem to have a chance of happening at this stage though, as the relationship between Gibson and the show’s producers seems to have been damaged permanently. It’s not clear how things are going to work out in the long run, but the two sides might have to come up with some way to put the incident behind them in the end, as it could be disastrous for both.
On one hand, Gibson will have trouble finding work after his reputation was tarnished from this incident, and on the other, the future of “Criminal Minds” is questionable without Aaron Hotchner. The producers could always find a way to replace the character, but that will take time and the show will have to be put on hold. Plus, it’s not guaranteed that fans will be okay with whatever replacement the actor ends up getting, so the show could still end up suffering.
Not many were actually surprised by the news, as Gibson is known for having an explosive temper, and this isn’t the first time he has clashed with someone around him. Some of the actor’s fans even used this as an argument in his defense, claiming that it’s just his nature and he shouldn’t be judged too harshly for responding in the only way he knows. Still, Gibson is supposed to uphold some level of professional standards, and getting into physical altercations with his coworkers on a major production like this definitely doesn’t speak well for his character.
It remains to be seen how the story will unfold, but at this stage things don’t look too good for Gibson. There are no reports indicating that the producers are considering reversing their decision, despite fans organizing social media campaigns to pressure them into making a statement. At the same time, the producers also don’t want to reveal what they are planning to do to compensate for Gibson’s absence. It’s entirely possible that they simply don’t know themselves and are scrambling to find a solution, in which case we’re going to find out in a few weeks.
Obviously it will take them some time to adequately respond to what has happened, and they would have to sort out many things behind the scenes before they can even address their fans. We don’t expect the producers to come forward with any information right now, so fans are likely wasting their efforts. Plus, they must realize that their silence is costing them a lot in terms of reputation and goodwill with their fans, so they are likely working hard to find a way to address the situation in a way that pleases everyone.
My husband & myself will no longer be watching Criminal Minds if he really is fired. It won’t be the same show without him. Fans will be not watching in droves. Stupid move
