When the decision is made to introduce a change to a franchise, this is usually met with controversial responses from fans. On one hand, there are always people who’re happy to see their favorite franchise evolving and receiving new additions that can potentially change it for the better; on the other, some fans typically fear that any changes to the base formula could potentially detract from the original idea too much. A similar thing happened with “Jurassic World” when it was revealed that the upcoming film will introduce a new, hybrid type of dinosaur.
Immediately, online discussion boards were on fire – some fans seemed a bit unhappy with the decision, claiming that it’s not right for a “Jurassic” movie to feature a hybrid dinosaur instead of the classic, completely “alive” dinosaurs. The main argument that was thrown around was usually that there are plenty of dinosaur species that haven’t been explored by the franchise yet, so if the producers wanted to throw something new into the mix, they could have easily just picked something out of that pool.
However, others have been more welcoming of the idea. In fact, some critics have been pointing out a rather uncomfortable truth that some fans seem to be missing. The first two sequels to the film weren’t received that well, precisely because they failed to innovate enough – at least according to fans back then. In both cases, viewers were basically given a repetition of the original story with a new “coat”.
And this was subsequently the reason why fans had to wait so long for “Jurassic World”. The studio wanted to actually take some risks and try and make a good, interesting movie that will once again spark people’s imaginations. So, in this context, it’s good to see that they’re thinking outside the box and introducing new changes to the formula, according to some critics.
Another interesting opinion that has been stated, is that the new dinosaurs could be interpreted as an allusion to the state of the outside world and the way it has evolved since the first films. A lot has changed, and viewers now have higher expectations for what a movie like this is going to show them. Some have jokingly been mentioning that Michael Bay is probably largely responsible for this, but that might not be too far off from the truth. Either way, the new “Jurassic World” is definitely going to be a different film than the first ones in the franchise. Whether that’s for better or worse, viewers will find out in a while. But it definitely has more potential than it would if it was a straight up sequel of the last film.
