DC Comics is reportedly planning to consolidate most of the superhero TV series featuring its characters. Three of the TV shows based on DC Comics are airing on The CW and these are “Arrow,” “The Flash” and “Legends of Tomorrow.” Two others aired on different networks – “Gotham” on Fox, and “Supergirl” on CBS, or at least its first season that is.
Beginning this fall, however, “Supergirl” Season 2 will move from CBS to The CW, leaving only “Gotham” as the only superhero TV series based on DC Comics not airing on the same network as the four other shows.
There are also rumors saying that DC Comics is working to revive Season 2 of the American supernatural drama TV series “Constantine” on The CW after it was canceled by NBC following its Season 1 finale in May last year.
The speculations somehow make sense especially in light of the fact that DC Comics is strengthening and also expanding its DC Extended Universe on the small screen following the box-office success of “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” in March this year, notes Breathecast.
However, DC Comics or The CW has yet to make an official statement with regards to revival rumors of Season 2 of “Constantine” so the information should be taken with a fine grain of salt.
Show was on the wrong network
Practically all of the TV series based on DC Comics are doing well in the ratings so it was rather surprising that it was not the same for “Constantine” when its first season aired on NBC.
Executive producer David Goyer has previously said that “Constantine” was on the wrong network and it is the reason why it was not able to generate good ratings the way the other TV shows based on DC Comics are doing in The CW or Fox.
Critics believe that if indeed DC Comics is determined to revive Season 2 of “Constantine” on The CW in an all-out effort to put as many pieces on the board for the DC Extended Universe, then it is making the right decision to bring it to The CW, reports Yibada.
“Constantine” Season 2 being aired on The CW would mean that DC Comics would already have five superhero TV series on the network and it is likely that it would work on bringing “Gotham” to its fold eventually.
A possible new lease on life
It has been 13 months since the American supernatural drama TV series “Constantine” was canceled by NBC for its second season just weeks after its Season 1 finale.
One of the show’s executive producers Daniel Cerone strongly lobbied with the network to reconsider its decision but NBC seems firm with its plan back then to unload TV series based on comic books. That’s in addition to the fact that the show was not enjoying very significant ratings the way it was hyped before its Season 1 was officially aired on the small screen.
Cerone then decided to offer “Constantine” Season 2 to be rescued from cancellation to other networks and also streaming service. Unfortunately, there were no takers to his offer. In fact, he even threw in veteran actor William Shatner of the “Star Trek” fame to be included in the second season of “Constantine” just to sweeten the deal.
But the networks and the streaming services do not want to have anything to do with the offer from the executive producer and the TV series per se.
However, there are now rumors swirling wildly on the internet that since DC Comics has decided to go full blast with its DC Extended Universe both in the movies and the TV, it is possible that “Constantine” might get revived in the process.
Meanwhile, NBC was reportedly disappointed with the live ratings of “Constantine,” pointing to an over-saturation of comic-inspired TV series. Network officials said back then that they wish that the show had done better live but it did not. “Constantine” did not come out the way they wanted it to be. As much as they love the show, from the business standpoint, it did not do the network well.
When NBC canceled “Constantine” in May last year, there were attempts to have the network reconsider its decision. One of them is through a petition, which unfortunately did not muster enough numbers for NBC to even give a second thought about its decision.
i really think and hope Constantine gets renewed on whatever channel…. it’s a great tv show… really funny, exciting, and also horrific at the same time… and also the guy is a f**king Brit… who wouldn’t love to watch him
