Castle Season 8 Split of Rick and Kate Gives Fans a Low Blow, Says Jimmy Kimmel!

Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel must be one of the millions of fans of the American crime drama TV series “Castle” on ABC. So when he recently guested Nathan Fillion, who plays protagonist Rick Castle in the TV series, in his talk show, Kimmel was quick to chide the actor about his character’s recent falling out with Kate Beckett, played by Stana Katic.

During the second episode of Season 8 of “Castle,” Kate asked from Rick some space to sort out some things in her own life, which is tantamount to splitting up.

According to Kate, she wanted to focus on solving the murder of her mother as well as breaking up a dangerous drug ring. Being the captain and the person-in-charge of the 12th Precinct, she does not want that her marriage with crime novelist Rick to get in the way of all of those.

The news actually came as a shock to viewers, including Jimmy Kimmel, because Rick and Kate were practically courting during the first seven seasons of the TV series and only tied the knot during the final stretch of Season 7.

When Fillion guested on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to promote Season 8 of “Castle,” Jimmy told Nathan that what the TV series did, in as far as his on-screen relationship with Stana is concerned, is robbed the fans of the relationship so soon that it seems like a low blow. Kimmel topped his comments by saying that it seems weird and almost abusive.

Traumatic for fans

As he has no proper response to what Jimmy Kimmel said, Nathan Fillion merely turned to comedic relief to show his surprised reaction over the general sentiments of the fans.

Kimmel continued the onslaught when he said that the situation of Rick and Kate in “Castle” at the moment would drum up all sorts of negative emotions similar to when someone was still a kid and his parents suddenly split up.

When asked by Kimmel if they also feel the same emotions that fans are feeling now, Fillion simply responded with a sarcastic ‘No’ along with a wink to the crowd and further adding that with ‘Not at all.’

But fans of the TV series know that the breakup of Rick and Kate, also known as Caskett, was just for show and is practically fake because it was an obvious attempt by “Castle” to redeem itself from its disastrous season premiere on September 21.

What is clear is that the showrunners do not have a fixed direction for the show for the first half of Season 8 and that the intention is merely to drag the relationship problems between Rick and Kate all the way to the winter hiatus of “Castle.” The main plotlines will then take center stage from there, notes the Den of Geek.

The great ingredients of “Castle”

What makes “Castle” a great TV series, as it has proven in the past, is a great case and the relationship of Rick and Kate thrown into the mix.

But the way the first four episodes of Season 8 have come out, it appears that the writers were brainstorming while reading the TV Tropes page because its stories are nothing more than one overused story idea after another strung together to make a cohesive whole, notes some critics.

Castle Season 7

“Castle” is seldom a very serious TV series, despite the fact that it is about homicides and it is that sense of fun that turns the excitement into a treat. It is also part of the efforts of the writers to salvage the plot of the series by playing more on the characters rather than the story.

The breakup of Rick and Kate was also the first time for the relationship in the history of the TV series. The split have caught fans of the show off guard but the plot was actually part of the incredible dynamics that showrunners Terence Paul Winter and Alexi Hawley promised when they took over from Andrew Malone and his wife Terri Edda Miller, at the start of Season 8.

  1. Did he say that the show’s dynamics is going to evolve all the way to the fall hiatus or dissolve all the way to the fall hiatus?

  2. Am I missing something? I have been looking at various episode lists and have noted that none contain an episode 9. Could this be the writing on the wall? Might as well be considering the way they have trashed the show this season. Castle has been a great ride for the most part until the train wreck known as season 8.

  3. Hawley and Winter you two are full of it and after Nathan Fillions performance on Jimmy Kimmil he’s the same! taking the piss out of the people that put him there

  4. I Agree John Hawly & winter is full of it .
Every interview hits the same BS !
This is going too make them stronger & it’s only temperery ! They do not know what they are doing ? They should of ended the show at
Season 7! When they where on top !
Now there loosing a lot of fans so !
    So Sad!
This use too be a great & fun show too watch
    What a shame !!

  5. They should have ended it with Holander’s Woods. It was a perfect end.
Nathan it is time you took some of the heat that everyone is dumping on Stana, that interview showed me two things1) Castle is not one of your priorities or loves and 2) You only care about Firefly,a series that has been gone for 14 years and Con Man.I watched Firefly it was nice but let it go.You are in a series with very dedicated fans and Jimmy is one.And you dis your fans that have been there for seven years.
The writers and show runners are under the gun and you were like tephlon, not now.

  6. Buddy you’re right this season is a train wreck. Apparently the writers don’t care about the shows fans. Horrible season

  7. Castle is dead in the water. Nathan ego has gotten to big for the talent that he is not. He is talented, but not as talented as he thinks he is. He likes his histrionics a little to much. Castle is in serious trouble.

  8. Nice to see Fillion stick up for the writers and the show. Instead he dodges all the questions, washing his hands of any responsibility throwing everybody else under the bus.
