For the first time since they got married in the American crime drama TV series “Castle” on ABC, Kate Beckett, played by Stana Katic, and Rick Castle, played by Nathan Fillion, have broken up during the second episode of Season 8 shown on September 28.
The split has caught fans of the show and that of Caskett, as fans love to call the relationship of Rick and Kate, off guard. But the plot was actually part of the incredible dynamics that showrunners Terence Paul Winter and Alexi Hawley promised when they took over from Andrew Malone and his wife Terri Edda Miller, at the start of Season 8, details US Weekly.
Winter and Hawley decided to take a new approach to the previously unbreakable couple. In a recent interview, Winter said that the new dynamics between Rick and Kate is going to evolve all the way to the show’s fall finale.
He also disclosed that there is going to be another shift and change that’s going to happen which viewers will find incredibly dynamic, and will lead “Castle” to an even more interesting storytelling that will bring both Rick and Kate in a fun way.
A worthy reason
But the breakup of Kate and Rick has nothing to do with the two no longer being in love with each other or perhaps some other reasons.
Kate simply wants to protect her husband because of the ominous and mysterious powers coming after her. She simply does not want Rick to become collateral damage from the threats in her life that she is now getting after assuming his post as Captain of 12th Precinct.
Hawley said that they are hoping that the audience sticks around long enough to see the next episode of “Castle” so that they would realize that it was only the beginning. He added that they are using the plot to put the spark back in, and the stakes back in, which gives “Castle” the fun and the juice.
Winter explained that during Season 7 of “Castle,” Beckett tried to be the happy wife and the great detective, but with the recent case she is handling only made her realize that there’s something inside her that has been broken. She hopes that by solving the current case, she will realize what she needs to get out of it soon.
Beckett will continue her role as Captain of 12th Precinct while Castle will further his private investigation business while trying to insert himself in occasional department’s case to be able to get close to his wife.
A new paradigm
Winter explained that there are things that they have been able to do in several episodes of “Castle” which they would not be able to even broach in the past. He added that it is all about creating a new paradigm in the relationship of Rick and Kate.
The co-showrunner said that they are really excited about what they were able to give Nathan and Stana to play. He added that it was a bold and tough choice, but fans should know that the relationship of Rick and Kate actually means the world to the showrunners and the show itself.
With that being said, he explained that they have a real plan on how to guide through the new path and they are optimistic that the couple and the fans are going to appreciate the journey that they will be taking on the current Season 8 of the popular TV series, cites TV Line.
Contrary to the reported spoilers of “Castle” before its Season 8 unraveling, the show went off to a fast start when it premiered on ABC on September 21.
The first episode of Season 8 of “Castle” was quite unique in the sense that it was told from the point of view of Rick, just like the way the episodes of the “Sex and the City” are told previously, which are mostly from the point of view of Sarah Jessica Parker playing the role of Carrie Bradshaw.
The first few minutes of the show began pleasantly enough highlighted by Rick presenting the newly appointed Captain Beckett with a bracelet.
Seems to me like the mold has been made and the new show runners are saying why be original we can use the mold to make as many copies as we want.
1. The mold: Kate’s inability to turn loose of any case involving the murder of people Kate knows (her mother and the AG team)
2: Activity: little if any on cases that are very important to Kate. This lack of activity continues to defy rationale to and past the point of boredom of the story line.
3. Solution: there is no solution until Castle enters the picture and initiates activity that leads to solution of the case. Solution of the case releases Kate from her mind set and things return to normal.
Now that we know what they are doing how long will it take to go from 1 to 3? They are now saying that stage 3 will be reached at the fall finale or 8×08.
The show runners promised new dynamics but they also promised not to touch the Caskett romance. What are they going to promise next and renege next?
They say now that they have a “real plan” for the show. They had better tell me or show me what it is soon or I might not make it to 8×08 when their “real plan” is supposed to “resolve” current issues and throw in another twist and scheme in the series.
What I don’t get is why they are returning to the original format of the show except that it was successful and they cannot be creative and original.
I have a “real plan” for myself that is pretty simple and does not have any twists. It provides that they get Caskett back together no later than 8×08 and leave their romance to grow or I’m leaving regretfully but positively.
I might add that the show runners have stated that the Caskett romance is supposed to be stronger than ever at the end of the season if not before. The current situation does not speak well for this but I try to keep hope up by recognizing that the show runners want the season to be successful so that they will be successful. They had better get things resolved and running smoother by the time of the viewer polls or there may be a mid-season cancelling of the show.
If you have to plead with people to stick with your show for six or seven more episodes and then they will like what happens, all you are going to wind up with is a cancelled show.
Recent spoilers that I have seen indicate that during (I believe) 8×05 we will see that work is indeed proceeding to find the partner of Bracken and end the threat on Beckett being killed.
Winter has said that the new dynamic between Rick and Kate is going to evolve all the way to the fall finale. Very important to note that he is not saying that Rick and Kate will be back together.
