Each year there is at least one, sometimes two, films that take the world by storm and that includes getting to all of the awards shows all over the world and taking home the memories that go along with them. That is exactly what is happening right now for the “Boyhood” film as it moves across the United Kingdom taking home awards in many different categories. The movie has been an ongoing project that has taken the better part of 12 years, according to sources.
Movies like this are gambling on the content of the movie and the fact that the audience appetite does not change for what is being filmed. With “Boyhood”, which is a coming-of-age drama, Richard Linklater said that it was more of “an experiment”. Many critics would say that the experiment worked and that the “leap of faith” that everyone took was well worth it in the end. The idea behind the movie was that it would be shot between 2002 and 2013 and shows the growing up of a young boy and his older sister into adulthood.
The movie was officially released in July of last year and was quickly declared a landmark film by some of the top critics. The film has been nominated for five Golden Globe Awards were it took home one for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress. Moving on to the Oscars, the film was nominated for six of them taking home Best Picture and Best Director.
The film also brought acting nominations for Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke. The movie stars Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke, Lorelei Linklater, Ellar Coltrane and Patricia Arquette and takes place in 2002 Texas. The movie runs about 2 hours and hits on some of the major milestones while the kids are growing up including a marriage, moving of the family after a divorce, camping trips, new teaching job, birthdays, new interests, girlfriends, boyfriends and all of the drama that comes with a split family that does not live in the same location.
The movie is unique in that is was filmed over a long period of actual time. In most cases, movies that span over many years, especially with children, there are more than one actor playing the kids as they grow up. In this case, that was not needed as the same actors are used throughout the movie making the real life aspect even more real for those that went to see it. Recently, “Boyhood” was nominated and won the top prize at the London Critics’.
