Even though “Clash of Clans” and “Boom Beach” get compared quite often, the two titles aren’t really that similar and they both have their own unique features that help them stand out from each other. Sure, the basic premise looks very familiar in both cases and it’s easy to see how some fans could get confused and claim that the two games are like each other. But at the same time, they also have a huge array of unique quirks and details that make them very distinct.
And the situation gets better with each update that the games receive too, as they are both developed in a specific direction that sets them apart even further. Every time one of the two games receives a major update, it’s developed in its own direction even further and becomes an even more unique and advanced experience that leverages a different set of skills from the player.
The games also have some differences in the basic premise in terms of their pace, tactics and overall approach required from the player. On one hand, we have “Clash of Clans” which is aimed at more patient players who don’t mind waiting a little longer to complete their actions. This is said to be the thinker’s game, the one which requires players to put a little more thought into what they’re doing and approach their situations with more responsibility for the consequences.
That’s because actions that players perform tend to have harsher consequences in the long run indeed, and one small mistake can quickly snowball out of control if the player is not careful. The situation is not really the same with “Boom Beach”, on the other hand, as that game favors faster reflexes and thinking on the spot. The game is also less punishing towards mistakes and while it does have its own set of consequences, it’s not quite that harsh to its players compared to its alternative.
Another way in which the two games differ is in the system for handling troops, as “Clash of Clans” requires a lot more micromanaging of barracks and troops in order for an army to be effective. There is also some level of control required in “Boom Beach”, but nowhere near the same, and the game is a bit more forgiving when it comes to the way the player controls their army. In addition to that, “Boom Beach” is said to be a bit more intuitive in its controls as well, but this is something highly individual and it’s hard to tell which game is better.
They have a different approach to their controls, that’s true, but there are also some similarities in their basic features and it’s obvious in both cases that the interface is designed in a way that favors the specific actions performed in that game, putting everything else in the background. Because of this, the systems end up different when all things are considered.
It’s hard to tell which game is objectively “better”, all of these things considered. “Boom Beach” and “Clash of Clans” both have their advantages and disadvantages for players looking for a specific style of gameplay, and the games are obviously aimed at different crowds. But objectively, they both manage to achieve their goals quite well and their features are obviously designed with a lot of thought and attention for the specific kind of gameplay that the game is trying to promote.
