As the prequel to the phenomenal American crime drama TV series “Breaking Bad,” “Better Call Saul” also on AMC is all about the transformation of Jimmy McGill into becoming the criminal lawyer Saul Goodman, with emphasis on the word criminal.
The transformation of Jimmy to Saul did not happen during the first two seasons of the prequel TV series and reports have been swirling that it would finally happen in the upcoming third season when it returns to the small screen early next year.
It could be recalled that in “Breaking Bad,” the transformation of Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, from an ordinary chemistry teacher to a drug kingpin who kills everybody who gets in his way, was also gradual. It actually took Walter White about five seasons until he became a drug lord.
It is expected that since “Better Call Saul” have the same showrunners as “Breaking Bad” in the persons of Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, the transformation of Jimmy would take some time.
What’s eating Mike?
However, there are now reports going around saying that other than Jimmy McGill, another character who shall be having a metamorphosis in the upcoming third season of “Better Call Saul” is Mike Ehrmantraut, played by Jonathan Banks.
Mike is a former police officer who evolved to become a pragmatic hitman as shown in “Breaking Bad.” His transformation in Season 3 of “Better Call Saul” shall also play a significant part in the upcoming evolution of ordinary lawyer McGill into becoming the filthiest criminal lawyer in town, reports Movie News Guide.
Fans and viewers of “Better Call Saul” have been so caught up with Jimmy’s future that they have actually forgotten about Mike.
Season 3 of the hit show shall reportedly focus on the back story of Mike as a former police officer and his involvement in drugs that led to his dismissal from the force.
There are also reports saying that there will be a connection between Jimmy and Mike which would be played up in the upcoming third season of “Better Call Saul.”
Gus Fring will emerge
What is also exciting fans of the TV series is the confirmed emergence of Gustavo ‘Gus’ Fring, played by Giancarlo Esposito, the iconic restaurateur cum drug kingpin in “Breaking Bad.”
The first letters of all the 10 episodes of Season 2 of “Better Call Saul” spelled out as FRINGSBACK, which hinted that Gus Fring will finally show up in Season 3 of the prequel to “Breaking Bad.”
Another major contributory factor to the transformation of Jimmy into Saul is the betrayal of his very own brother, notes the Christian Post.
According to spoilers, Charles ‘Chuck’ McGill, played by Michael McKean, will be using the evidence he got on the Mesa Verde files to betray Jimmy which would cost him his relationship with Kim Wexler, played by Rhea Seehorn, and his law career.
Jimmy’s transformation to become Saul has always been inevitable since the entire series is premised on that. For the past two seasons of “Better Call Saul”, Jimmy was seen as always staying on the right side of the law regardless of the many temptations that would make him be otherwise.
He has always chosen to be the good lawyer on issues. But, the betrayal on him by his own blood may finally be the turning point in his life that fans have been waiting for.
Chuck has never been a good big brother to Jimmy because of his hidden jealousy on his brother since they were little. So instead of becoming his brother’s keeper, he always finds a way to put Jimmy on a hot spot or a bind just to see how much he can take in life and also get even with him in some way.
Apparently, the unhealthy brotherly relationship between Jimmy and Chuck will have a telling impact on the eventual metamorphosis of Jimmy and reports have it that the upcoming Season 3 of “Better Call Saul” shall see Chuck having that huge part in the transformation of his brother into Saul Goodman.
According to reports, Jimmy would admit to his brother that he tampered the Mesa Verde files. He also talked about how he helped Kim Wexler to compromise the case.
But it seems that Jimmy would also realize that Chuck already knew what happened. What he does not know is that Chuck is set to betray him in Season 3 by using their recorded conversations to implicate him,
That would surely push Jimmy McGill over the edge considering that he always had the highest regard for his brother.
As early as Season 2 of “Better Call Saul,” there have already been indications that Jimmy might finally break and out comes Saul Goodman but it seems that it is the gist of the TV series and making Saul Goodman come out too early would mean the show is close to its end.
It is likely that just like its parent TV series, “Better Call Saul” shall have five seasons so critics believe that the transformation of Jimmy McGill will not yet happen in Season 3 but most likely towards the latter part of Season 4 or early in Season 5, assuming that the show eventually gets greenlit for a fifth season.
