Benedict Cumberbatch is Officially Hitched, And More

“Sherlock” actor Benedict Cumberbatch is officially a married man after tying the knot with long-time fiancée Sophie Hunter during the weekend.

Express and Star reported that the “Imitation Game” actor has agreed to the most important leading man role of his life by finally saying “I do” to Sophie Hunter who is already pregnant with their first child.

The private ceremony was said to be held in the south of England and other details were not immediately available since the event was reportedly made a close family affair.

The 38-year-old British actor is nominated for Best Actor in the Oscars later this month for his role as the tortured genius war hero Alan Turing in the critically-acclaimed movie “Imitation Game.”

Sophie Hunter, 36, is a director, a linguist, a musician and an actress. She and Benedict appeared together in the 2009 film “Burlesque Fairytales.”

The couple announced their engagement in November and since then, nearly everyone was second-guessing their wedding date. But Cumberbatch hinted that he and Sophie will definitely tie the knot before their baby is born.

Good following

Benedict Cumberbatch has a good following both in his home country in the UK and the US. His surging popularity in Hollywood has in fact prompted Marvel Studios to take him in on its roster of Marvel superheroes where he will be playing the role of Doctor Strange.

A movie on “Doctor Strange” is now on the drawing board and may be announced by Marvel Studios once details are available.

Cumberbatch refers to his global army of fans as Cumberbitches especially now that he is one of the most popular, if not the most popular, British actor.

His rise to fame was anchored on the BBC detective series “Sherlock” where he plays the lead role. He has starred in blockbuster movies including “Star Trek: Into Darkness” and “12 Years a Slave.”

Meeting Sophie

Before meeting Sophie, Benedict previously dated actress Olivia Poulet and designer Anna Jones.

An Oxford graduate who studied modern languages, Sophie has helmed a number of experimental and avant garde productions including the puppet version of “Shackleton’s Antartic Expedition” which also toured the US.

Aside from directing, she has also taken on acting roles on the TV show “Torchwood,” which was a spin-off of “Doctor Who.” She also appeared on an episode of “Midsomer Murders” and also the film “Vanity Fair” starring Reese Witherspoon back in 2004.

Sophie’s credits as a director include the Britten opera “The Rape of Lucretia.” She also had a music career once, recording a French language album with Guy Chambers in 2005 which is titled “The Isis Project.”

With their wedding, Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter will soon be expecting their first Cumberbaby. But the Oscar nominee says that his mother wanted to have many grandchildren by him so fans should expect more Cumberbabies from his end in the future.
