American musician, singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Beck, who won the Album of the Year award during the 57th Annual Grammy Awards on February 8, showed extreme class in light of the aborted Kanye West stage invasion, when he was about to deliver his acceptance speech for the honor.
Beck won the award for his album “Morning Phase.”
While initial reports have it that rapper Kanye West was just making a fool of himself by reprising his infamous 2009 stage act during the MTV Video Music Awards on Taylor Swift, it turns out that Kim Kardashian’s husband really feels that Beyonce should have won the Album of the Year award instead of Beck.
But instead of being piqued or annoyed, Beck told US Magazine that when he saw Kanye West coming in to the podium he more than welcomed him. Beck said that Kanye deserves to be on the stage as much as anybody. He even cited that Kanye has come up with many great records in the last five years so he deserves to be on the stage as well, notes The Independent of Ireland.
Mouthful against the Grammys
Kanye West came up the stage during the awarding of the Album of the Year because he once again felt that Beyonce should have won the award.
It was the same act he pulled off in 2009 when he went up the stage while Taylor Swift was making her acceptance speech for Best Female Video honors, and told her that Beyonce’s video is the best of all time. That act generated a lot of boos from the crowd and had Kanye West officially designated as a villain in the music industry since then.
Kanye went up the stage again during Beck’s acceptance speech, but decided at the last minute to turn his back and take his seat again.
The rapper really feels that Beyonce should have won the Album of the Year award. During the interview with E! News after the awarding ceremonies, Kanye said that Beck needs to respect artistry and that he should have given the Album of the Year award to Beyonce.
Kanye also criticized the Grammys for playing with music artists, saying that if they want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with them. He warned that artists will no longer be playing with the Grammys anymore.
Kim Kardashian’s husband went on to say that when art is continuously being diminished and not respecting the talent and craft of people after they deliver monumental feats of music, the award-giving institution is actually smacking them in the face and is being disrespectful to their inspiration to continue doing good music.
He concluded his litany against the Grammys by saying that musicians have to inspire people who go to work every day, and they listen to that Beyonce album and they feel like it takes them to another place.
Beyonce is Beyonce
But instead of being hurt or annoyed with the mouthful from Kanye West, Beck was a picture of calmness and composure.
Asked whether he agreed that Beyonce should have won the Album of the Year award, Beck said absolutely. He thought that she was going to win because she’s Beyonce.
As for Kanye West, Beck has only good words for the rapper. He said that no one can please everybody and that he still loves the rapper and thinks he is a genius. Beck said that he aspires to do what Kanye does.
