As of the start of 2016, the “Battlefield” series has produced 13 games and 23 expansion packs. It is expected that with the impending release of “Battlefield 5” and the last DLC for “Battlefield: Hardline,” the number will increase to 14 and 24, respectively, around the second half of this year.
“Battlefield” video game series focus on large, online multiplayer battles, but the series contained a new Cops versus Robbers theme with the release of “Battlefield: Hardline” last year.
The new title does not have the emphasis on piloting vehicles the way it has on its previous titles but “Battlefield: Hardline” still has a number of vehicles and team-based infantry combat. Playing squads have also become major elements of games in the series.
Since “Battlefield 2,” all games in the franchise centrally record online statistics for each player allowing them to receive rank promotions and weapon unlocks based on their statistics as well as awards such as medals, ribbons, and pins.
A class system has been present within all the “Battlefield” games. Each class features a different type of primary weapon along with different equipment, differentiating roles on the battlefield.
The ability to melee other players with a knife has always been present in “Battlefield” games. Also, since “Battlefield 2142” released in 2006, the series has introduced an award of dog tags for each player killed using a knife.
