Following the official release of the third and latest trailer of “Avengers: Age of Ultron” on March 4 and drawing a lot of excitement from movie fans in the process, a top executive of Warner Bros who’s producing “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice” says that DC is going to do it better than Marvel.
The coming together of the DC Comics superheroes in one cinematic universe will happen with “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” which will be hitting theaters on March 25, 2016.
Kevin Tsujihara, CEO of Warner Bros, says that the worlds of DC are very different from Marvel’s. There is a certain level of realism to the DC universe and it’s also a little bit edgier compared to the Marvel cinematic universe. Apart from saying it with pride and confidence, Tsujihara also made the statement without batting an eyelash, notes the International Business Times.
Despite the proliferation of superhero movies from the past couple of years up to this year, the Warner Bros top executive is also confident that the movie-going public will not have the so-called superhero fatigue by the time “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice” hits the theaters next year.
Unorthodox title
If there’s one thing that some fans raise against “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” it is only the film’s seeming unorthodox or somewhat contrasting title.
For those who are in the know, the movie premise is already clear from the title – that Superman and Batman will fight it out first, become friends eventually, and establish the Justice League, which is a union of the DC superheroes, like the Avengers in the Marvel version.
But the movie will still be full of classic DC superheroes including Batman, to be played by Ben Affleck; Superman, to be played by Henry Cavill; Wonder Woman, to be played by Gal Gadot; Aquaman, to be played by Jason Momoa, among a few others.
Just like what Marvel Studios did with the Avengers, Warner Bros is also hoping to make “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice” become the springboard for the release of stand-alone DC movies such as “Wonder Woman,” “Aquaman,” the “Suicide Squad,” and “The Justice League.”
Run for the money
In October last year, Marvel announced that it has a nine-movie plate from 2015 to 2019. But it looks like it will have more than nine this time around especially with the official entry of Spider-Man last month into the Marvel cinematic universe.
There are also reports that “Avengers: Age of Ultron” may also bring about other stand-alone movies including “Doctor Strange,” or perhaps “Vision” who will both be featured in the upcoming movie.
DC and Marvel have had a friendly comic-book rivalry for decades. They have obviously taken their acts to higher stakes and the big budget film arena and the fans and superhero enthusiasts the world over seem to be benefitting from it all.
While Marvel may have had more superhero movies over the past three to five years, DC has all the materials and resources to make the catching up in a big way. “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice” may just be the catalyst it is waiting for to give Marvel a run for the money in the film industry.
