‘Awkward’ Season 5 Will Likely See Jenna and Matty Getting Back Together Again Before They Graduate from High School

The fifth and final season of the American teen comedy series “Awkward” will return to MTV on August 31 and fans of the show are already excited to see the characters of the Palos Hills High on their final year in high school and also one year after moving on to college.

It was reported that the 24 episodes of Season 5 of “Awkward” will be divided into two parts. The first 12 episodes will focus on the senior year of the cast members at Palos Hills High ending with their graduation, while the second part will focus on their lives one year after their graduation from high school.

MTV senior vice president Mina Lefevre confirmed the two-part Season 5 of “Awkward.” She said that the first half of Season 5 will finally see Jenna Hamilton, played by Ashley Rickards, and her friends graduate from high school.

She added that the second half of the season will pick up with the cast a year later, where they quickly realize those awkward moments in life do not stop once they leave high school. Lefevre also explained that the new premise opens up endless opportunities to continue telling the story of Jenna and friends, notes the International Business Times of UK.

Coming clean with their true feelings

Based on the latest trailer of Season 5 of the teen comedy series, it looks like Jenna would reunite with Matty McKibben as they will finally come clean about their true feelings for each other, notes MTV.

The fifth season will also see Jenna and her friends getting extremely sentimental about closing an important chapter of their teen years. The first half of the season will also highlight the cast of characters having their traditional rites of passage including the prom night, graduation ceremonies, and saying goodbye to one another.

The trailer also showed Matty speaking to Jenna and saying that they were really good together and that he misses the way they were. Eventually, during the prom, the white gown-wearing Jenna tells a tuxedo-wearing Matty to wait up as she is going to tell him something. Obviously it’s a major reveal that things will be looking up for the relationship of Jenna and Matty on Season 5.

The Season 4 finale of “Awkward” left fans on a cliffhanger with Lacey finding out that she’s pregnant, Jenna falling for Brian, Tamara getting engaged to Brian’s friend Adam, Jake sleeping with Gabby, Val deciding to quit her job, and Matty, finally accepting that he has lost Jenna forever.

Now, that’s a whole lot of cliffhangers to chew on once the premiere episode of Season 5 airs towards the end of this month.

Why there is no Season 6

“Awkward” is such a hit comedy TV series on the MTV channel so it came as a surprise to fans why the show was not renewed beyond Season 5.

From the storyline of the TV series, it is difficult to keep the show going especially if the setting is in high school which usually is just four years. The cast cannot be forever in high school too. That is why Season 5 shall focus on the preparation of most of the cast members to graduate from Palos Hills High even as they also prepare for their next phase in life as they all go to college.

Created by Lauren Iungerich for MTV channel, “Awkward” follows the life of central character teenager Jenna Hamilton from Palos Verdes, California who struggles with her identity especially after an accident which was misconstrued as a suicide attempt.

“Awkward” premiered on July 19, 2011, for its first season. After its first season, the series was generally well-received with TV critics even commending the show’s touch of realism with very good writing and story for its central character.

The show even went on to make it to the critic’s Top 10 lists. Consistent with its positive reviews, “Awkward” eventually earned several nominations over the span of four years, winning one Teen Choice Award and one People’s Choice Award.

During the past season, central character Jenna is already in her senior year in high school and is hoping to make amends for the prior year’s mishaps.
