‘Awkward’ Season 5 Will Be its Last as Jenna Graduates from High School to College

The fifth season of the American teen comedy TV series “Awkward” will hit the MTV channel on August 31 which means good news for the loyal fans of the show.

The bad news is that Season 5 will also be the show’s last. While the show has yet to officially draw to a close, the good news for fans is that the MTV channel is giving them the opportunity to say goodbye to their favorite “Awkward” characters like Jenna Hamilton, Matty McKibben, and the rest of the Palos Hills High, notes When Will.

“Awkward” is such a hit comedy TV series on the MTV channel so it came as a surprise to fans why the show was not renewed beyond Season 5.

From the storyline of the TV series, it is difficult to keep the show going especially if the setting is in high school which usually is just four years. The cast cannot be forever in high school too. That is why Season 5 shall focus on the preparation of most of the cast members to graduate from Palos Hills High even as they also prepare for their next phase in life as they all go to college.

Teenage struggles

Created by Lauren Iungerich for MTV channel, “Awkward” follows the life of central character teenager Jenna Hamilton, played by Ashley Rickards, from Palos Verdes, California who struggles with her identity especially after an accident which was misconstrued as a suicide attempt.

“Awkward” premiered on July 19, 2011 for its first season. After its first season, the series was generally well-received with TV critics even commending the show’s touch of realism with its very good writing and story for its central character.

The show even went on to make it to the critic’s Top 10 lists. Consistent with its positive reviews, “Awkward” eventually earned several nominations over the span of four years, winning one Teen Choice Award and one People’s Choice Award.

In June 2013, it was announced that show creator Lauren Iungerich would be leaving the show at the wrap of the Season 3 production. The rest of the show’s third season started airing on October 22, 2013 with Iungerich already officially out.

On August 5, 2013, the show was renewed for a fourth season which premiered on MTV on April 15, 2014 under new creators Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler. The two continue as showrunner for the fifth and final season.
