Major productions in all industries are commonly surrounded by rumors and alleged leaks, and it’s really not that rare for confidential information to find its way to the public. People tend to be split on that issue – some enjoy the leaks, others claim that they spoil the surprise – and there are also those who like to keep a healthy dose of skepticism in order to avoid facing disappointment afterwards if the leak turns out to be false.
A recent rumor about “Avatar 2” is a good example in favor of the last camp, as fans of the original film were very excited to get their hands on what was claimed to be leaked concept art from the upcoming sequel. The art showed some details about what the world and characters of the film would supposedly look like, but in the end it turned out that it was fake.
And while the art did look good, some were quick to point out that there were some minor inconsistencies in it and that it might not be real. However, there was far too much hype for the voices of reason to be heard, and for a while, we saw a lot of discussion about what the implications of that art could be.
The account that posted the alleged leak was supposedly owned by Jon Landau, and it was actually designed in a creatively convincing way which had many people fooled. For a while, some were actively following his posts and waiting for even more “updates”, until Landau himself had to step in and clear up the confusion, stating that he has no affiliation with the account in question and that the leaked concept art was fake.
In addition, he said that he was in talks with Twitter over the account and he was trying to shut it down and possibly trace it back to its owner. Twitter generally takes the authenticity of celebrity accounts very seriously, so he should have no issues with that. On the other hand, people following such leaks should probably pay more attention to the verified status of accounts that the posts are coming from.
We are generally still in the dark with regards to Cameron’s work on that project otherwise. Most people have big expectations overall, especially after the director made some interesting claims about his progress. According to him, his biggest hurdle right now is that he doesn’t have access to the technology that he needs to implement all ideas that he has in mind.
This statement immediately sparked a lot of interest as it implied that the film is going to feature some pretty advanced imagery. While we have no idea what that could be about specifically, there have been talks about massive underwater scenes with a lot of fine detail. That could definitely be something that requires more processing power and we wouldn’t be surprised if modern rendering technology really is too weak to satisfy his needs. Especially if he has some unique special effects in mind that aren’t so commonly done by other directors.
The film is surrounded by a lot of anticipation right now. After all, it’s the sequel to one of the biggest films of all time and its director seems determined to outdo his success with the original. Whether or not he can pull that off remains to be seen, but lots of people have high expectations for the next “Avatar” in any case. Once that film is out, it may not even need a lot if advertisement as pretty much everyone already knows about it and is waiting for it.
