Cameron did previously say that he had gone too far in writing the next film though, so it’s very likely that he at least has a basic overview of the whole series, if not any concrete plans.
One thing is certain right now – after so much time has passed since the release of the original “Avatar”, the hype about this film will be stronger than ever, putting some serious pressure on Cameron to make it a solid release.
After all, “Avatar” went down in history as one of the most famous cinematic productions, and it became a benchmark for special effects as well. The director and his team did basically everything right with that film, and they also had lots of good luck on their way to success as well.
With all that in mind, it’s understandable how fans might expect something much more spectacular from the sequel, making it important for Cameron to take as much time as possible to get it perfect. We have seen numerous incidents in the entertainment industry – not just with movies either – where the sequel to a beloved work has turned out to be significantly below the expectations of fans. James Cameron is no newcomer to this industry and he has the experience to understand this issue, so we expect that he will take a more special approach to this film in order to ensure that it pleases his fans, even if it means changing the original structure significantly.
