Sigourney Weaver, the veteran actress who played Dr. Grace Augustine in “Avatar,” has been confirmed by the critically-acclaimed director, writer, and producer James Cameron to return not only in “Avatar 2” but in the three other sequels of the franchise all the way to “Avatar 5.”
Dr. Grace Augustine died in the first movie so her reappearance in “Avatar 2” was quite a surprise to fans initially.
In addition to Weaver, also returning from the dead in “Avatar 2” is Col. Miles Quaritch, played by actor Stephen Lang.
When asked how he intends to bring back the two major characters who have previously died in the first movie, James Cameron said that nobody dies in a fiction movie. In fact, he even hinted that the character of Stephen Lang will show up in the most unlikely places in the course of the four sequels.
Much more amazing than the original
While doing her upcoming Marvel movie titled “The Defenders,” Sigourney Weaver claimed that “Avatar 2” and the three subsequent sequels are much more amazing than the first film shown in 2009.
Everyone knows that “Avatar” was the most successful film of all time, generating more than $2.7 billion in the box office. So when Sigourney Weaver said that the sequels are better and much more amazing, then it also opens the possibility that “Avatar 2” or any of its three other sequels can actually topple “Avatar” from its lofty perch in the all-time list of highest-grossing films.
Since filming for “Avatar 2” and its sequels have yet to begin, critics wonder how the actress was able to make her assumption about its comparison to the original film.
Apparently, Weaver was basing it on the scripts of the movies that she happened to have been provided already.
She said in a recent interview that in her opinion, the three scripts that she has read so far are many times more amazing than the first one in terms of scope, details Slash Film.
But some critics aver that the actress would surely be going to speak highly of the scripts because it would not make sense for her to start bad-mouthing a franchise she is involved in before she even starts shooting the sequels.
“Avatar 2” shall hit cinemas in December 2018 and will be followed by three more films to be released in December 2020, in December 2022, and in December 2023, notes Dark Horizons.
Aiming for greatness and perfection
If you aim for greatness and perfection, then work to be great and perfect. That seems to be the personal mantra of James Cameron for the first sequel to the most successful film of all time, “Avatar.”
In a recent statement, James Cameron said that he is going to look for a way for viewers to get a 3D viewing in “Avatar 2” and the subsequent three sequels without the glasses themselves. It is an objective which is still not possible with current technology.
Cameron said that he is going to push for better tools, workflow, high-dynamic range, and high frame rates for “Avatar 2” and the three other sequels. He added that despite the current technological situation, he remains bullish on 3D viewing.
He said that people need a brighter project and he really feels that ultimately it can happen with no glasses. He was so positive that modern technology would get there.
The latest statements of Cameron have spawned speculations that the release date of “Avatar 2” could be moved again because he wanted technology to catch up with what he wants to do in the movie.
But critics are also saying that with the VR technology just around the corner, 3D viewing without the glasses can actually happen within a year or maybe less so the December 2018 target of “Avatar 2” is certainly on target still.
