Something new is in store for Emily Bett Rickard’s Felicity Smoak when the fifth season of “Arrow” returns on The CW in October.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Marc Guggenheim revealed that something big is going to happen with Felicity’s life in the upcoming season and fans will definitely like it.
Last we saw of the blonde IT girl, despite being on speaking terms, she and Oliver are still broken up. However, they are the only members of Team Arrow who are striving to protect Star City against the evil lurking almost anywhere.
Guggenheim says now that Oliver will be working as the mayor of the city by day, Felicity is entering a brand new territory by training new vigilantes to help the Green Arrow fulfill his duties.
This means that fans might get to see Ms. Smoak getting some action instead of sitting in her computer chair. Wendy Mericle, a writer for The CW hit hinted that Rickards has undergone some intense training for this season.
The first trailer for the upcoming season of “Arrow” shows Oliver training new allies and Felicity could be helping him do that. Fans say that it’s about time that they see a new version of Felicity.
Co-executive producer Andrew Kreisberg seems to support such speculation by saying that Felicity will be moving in a different direction in Season 5 which will make viewers appreciate her character more.
Kreisberg says that the change will be evident during the second half of the season. He adds that it won’t be involving Oliver nor Felicity’s relationship with her mom and dad. It’s something that she has to go through alone.
The executive producer says her new role will be the key to the whole story for Season 5. It will also be a refresh for the character as it looks like she and Oliver won’t get back together anytime soon.
Now that Team Arrow has broken up — with Diggle going back to military and Thea saddened by Laurel’s death — Felicity and Oliver will be needing all the help they could get for Season 5’s new big bad.
She will also be dealing with her part in the nuclear destruction of Havenrock last season. The showrunner says that Felicity is bound to be facing some pretty strong feelings during the first part of Season 5.
Kreisberg says that Felicity has been carrying an immeasurable guilt after sacrificing Havenrock over Star City. He says that the first five episodes will see the aftermath of Felicity’s decision.
Moreover, a possible new love interest for Felicity might come in handy in the upcoming season. The last boyfriend she had before Oliver was Ray Palmer, who is also known as The Atom, in “Legends of Tomorrow.”
The two were set to wed but Felicity realized her true feelings for Oliver Queen. Reports suggest that Felicity will find herself again in Season 5 and will give love another try.
Meanwhile, the show will introduce three new characters in the upcoming season — Artemis, Mr. Terrific, and Wild Dog.
The CW has recently released the first look at the new group of vigilantes in costume. Rick Gonzales will be playing Jack Wheeler also known as Wild Dog.
In the comic books, Wheeler was a marine. Most of his comrades were killed in a deadly bombing while he was deployed.
He decided to be a vigilante when his girlfriend was shot dead. He uses his military skills in fighting crime.
Madison McLaughlin will be playing Artemis. The newest vigilante will be following the footsteps of Laurel’s Black Canary.
The character, known as Evelyn Sharp, was already introduced during the Season 4 finale where she posed as the Black Canary to seek revenge on Damien Darhk and the Green Arrow for the death of her parents.
