Season 5 of the American superhero drama TV series “Arrow” will take the show back to its roots in terms of the kind of villain that the Green Arrow would be dealing with.
As every fan of the TV series knows, Oliver Queen, a.k.a the Green Arrow, is very much like Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman. He does not have supernatural or superhero powers and much of his mysticism, just like the Dark Knight, is because he has the money to use technology to his advantage and develop customized weapons for use in crime-fighting.
The Green Arrow is not like The Flash or Superman or other superheroes, who have been gifted with special powers, which is also the reason why they often go up against villains who possess special powers as well.
The first two seasons of “Arrow” saw Oliver Queen, played by actor Stephen Amell, dealing with human villains, who do not have superpowers. For some reason, since the third season of “Arrow,” Team Arrow has been fighting against villains with superpowers including Ra’s Al Ghul in the third season and Damien Darhk in the recently-concluded fourth season.
What takes the cake of criticisms on “Arrow” was during the Season 4 finale where Team Arrow defeated the magic-wielding villain whose superpowers increased exponentially after sacrificing tens of thousands of people by merely a combination of good will and fisticuffs.
Apparently, the showrunners have taken note of the criticisms, some of them harsh, which is why they shall no longer be doing the same mistake in Season 5 of “Arrow,” reports Collider.
The new big bad
Rumors are rife that the villain who will go up against Team Arrow or whatever is left of it is to be named Anton Church.
The character does not exist in the DC Comics but reports have it that the villain will be patterned from Idris Elba’s Stringer Bell character from the HBO TV series “The Wire,” details TV Line.
Anton Church is described as a ruthless crime lord who will fill the power vacuum left by the death of Damien Darhk and the duplicitous Mayor Ruve Adams of Star City.
Church‘s character is said to be an apex predator who cuts his way through the shadows by taking the first threat first.
New character coming
In addition to the big bad character, a new cast member will reportedly be coming into the TV series and he shall be joining the already depleted Team Arrow.
The new character is said to be a series-regular role named James, who is described as an irrepressibly charming contemporary of Oliver Queen.
James is also described as a man on a mission and is out to avenge a tragic, violent loss from his own past several years ago. The producers and showrunners have yet to disclose the actors who would be taking on the roles of James and Anton Church.
There is also no word yet on speculations or queries going around that Season 5 might be the last for “Arrow.”
But what is clear at this juncture is that Oliver Queen shall have plenty of friends and enemies in the upcoming season and they shall all be engaged in more grounded fighting, where there will be no magic or superpowers involve but more on combat and tactical skills, as well as brute strength.
Meanwhile, the Season 4 finale of “Arrow” aired on May 25 on The CW turned out to be a blast as expected, much to the delight of the viewers.
The Season 4 finale featured a scene that was really unlike anything that the show has done in the past, which was already hinted by Stephen Amell in an interview one week before the final episode of the fourth season.
Oliver Queen got into a certain state of mind before setting out to stop Damien Darhk, played by Neal McDonough, and stopped the villain from reacquiring the Rubicon and using it to let the entire world burn.
The Season 4 finale was a lot different than the riding off to the sunset Season 3 finale last year, where Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak, played by Emily Bette Rickards, decided to move away from it all.
Just before the Season 4 finale, The CW released several photos of the 23rd and final episode of “Arrow.”
