An eBay user has reportedly attracted bids of more than US$ 100,000 for an iPhone 6 prototype that he claims is at his disposal. The user claims that he received the phone in error. He had the iPhone listed at a starting bid of US$ 999 and by Saturday a bidder had taken the price up to US$ 50,000, directly up from US$ 14,800.
There has been no looking down since. The current price of the device is static at US$ 114,155 with 80 bidders and 200 bids. The seller kimberlyk1018 has no previous sales records on eBay although he had made just one confirmed purchase previously.
The seller claims that he was mistakenly sent the Apple iPhone 6 prototype by Verizon and that the device runs on a diagnostic software and not Apple’s iOS 8. The seller said, “On sale unused iPhone 6 prototype. Apple does not offer these phones on sale, but I was sent one by Verizon by mistake upon contract renewal.”
“As evident from the images, this device does not run on iOS 8 but rather test software, confirming its true prototype nature. There are no external markings on the device or the model number. This is not a fake. This is the real deal!”
Whether or not this phone is the ‘real deal’ is yet to be known, but the images are much like the Apple iPhone 6 prototypes that were released by the company. The seller claims that this is a 64GB model but since it is a prototype it might not work properly.
“I cannot guarantee perfect operation as it is a prototype. However, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity as these are hard if not impossible to come by.” A reputed blogger revealed that even though the software and hardware are likely to be real, the bids were pumped up by hoax bids.
“This is a very common practice among people. When they get their hands on such a device, they think that it’s worth a lot and try to blow things out of proportion in the hopes of attracting media attention.” He said.
