Apple announced its latest mobile operating system in June and made it officially available on September 16. iOS 9 is the successor to iOS 8 and focuses less on new features and more on under-the-hood optimizations as well as battery improvement.
While iOS 9 keeps the same overall look and design as its previous version, the newest operating system comes with a slew of fresh features such as Spotlight Search improvements, transit directions in Apple Maps, and Split View multitasking on the iPad.
iOS 9 supports iPhone 4S models and higher, 5th, and 6th generation iPod Touch, iPad 2 and higher versions, and all iPad minis. As of October 19, the latest operating system has been installed on 61% of compatible Apple devices.
The first update was released a few days after iOS 9 was released. The iOS 9.0.1 fixed a major bug that caused the ‘Slide to Upgrade’ screen to freeze when updating from earlier versions of the operating system.
On September 30, iOS 9.0.2 was released to fix a major lock screen bypass issue and recently, the iOS 9.1 was released.
iOS 9.1 includes over 150 new emoji characters, stability improvement, and more bug fixes. It also includes support for the upcoming iPad Pro and Apple Pencil in November, as well as the new Apple TV.
