The cat-and-mouse game between Apple and iOS jailbreakers continues – after the company recently released updates that made the TaiG jailbreak tool obsolete for the most recent versions of iOS, the tool’s developers have responded by updating it to support iOS 8.1.2. With the newest release, owners of the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5S, 5C, 5, 4S and all devices in the iPad line will be able to jailbreak their iOS and enjoy the benefits of an unlocked system.
So, at this point, the ball is in Apple’s court – after the company announced the 8.1.1 update, they claimed that the new version is going to be significantly more secure with regards to jailbreaking, and will not give crackers any opportunity to get around the operating system’s locks. However, most people who are familiar with the way this scene works in general, as well as the specifics of jailbreaking, were well aware that it’s only a matter of time before the new version of iOS becomes just as open as the previous ones.
It should be noted that the TaiG team didn’t even have to do any serious work to get the tool to work with iOS 8.1.2, as the new version of the operating system apparently has the same security features as the previous one, and the team just had to make some small changes to the software in order to get it to support iOS 8.1.2.
However, owners of Apple’s mobile devices are going to have to use a Windows PC to do the job, as the tool is currently not supported on Mac OS X. Of course, there’s still the option of running Windows in a virtual machine, so as long as a valid Windows license is available, it should be no problem to run the jailbreak tool and make full use of its features. The tool doesn’t use any complicated system calls that would cause issues with a virtual box setup, and users have actually already reported that it works fine under those conditions.
Apple have been quiet on the issue, although the company rarely directly acknowledges the “work” of the jailbreak community, unless they’re talking about the security features of the latest version of iOS. It’s expected that they’re going to release an update eventually, which will likely patch out the current jailbreak vulnerability, although given the past trends, it won’t take long before the operating system is open again. Some critics have been commenting that Apple are wasting far too much effort trying to combat jailbreakers like this, and should instead focus their development work on improving the operating system even more, while others are of the opinion that the two don’t have to overlap.
