Apple’s fans who’ve been relying on jailbreak tools so far might want to hold off upgrading to iOS 10, as the new version of the operating system has apparently been locked down quite tightly, and is giving crackers quite the hard time.
Reports indicate that some of the most prominent teams on the jailbreak scene have been finding it hard to find any cracks in the new version of the operating system, which means that fans are going to have to sit patiently for now. Whether or not the situation is going to be resolved anytime soon is hard to tell however, and it’s possible that this might finally be Apple’s crushing blow against the jailbreak community.
According to some tech experts however, this might not be a reason for Apple to celebrate. In fact, it might actually spell disaster for the company in the long run, and it could be a suicide move for them. Many fans of iOS rely on jailbreaking in order to unlock the full capabilities of their devices, and taking that away from them means potentially losing them as customers in the future.
The iPhone 7 already came out to some skeptical responses, particularly due to Apple’s decision to remove the headphone jack. Being the flagship of the version of iOS which finally removes jailbreaking might end up being a little too much for the reputation of the device, and subsequently for its follow-up.
We’ve been getting mixed reports about the current status of a jailbreak tool for iOS 10. There were initially claims that the system had been broken and a tool was on the way, but nothing came out in the end.
There are also rumors of an alleged tool already in existence, but it’s apparently not made public yet and may not be released anytime soon due to unknown issues. It’s also not clear which team managed to develop that tool if the rumors are true, but most are currently pointing towards Pangu.
The team is one of the most prominent ones on the iOS jailbreak scene, and they’ve been responsible for many solutions to similar problems in the past. It looks like they’ve finally met a proper challenge now though, and Apple may have been victorious this time.
The industry has been divided on Apple’s stance on the situation for a long time. Many claim that it actually hurts Apple’s users when they do this, as it takes away their ability to customize their devices and get the most out of them. On the other hand, some defend Apple, claiming that they are doing this for their users and are protecting them against malicious software and other types of attacks.
However, it’s arguable how much this is actually true. So far, the only more serious examples of malicious software we’ve seen were actually targeted at jailbreak users, disguising as jailbreak tools. The situation can be seen from the point of view that this would have never happened if there was no need for jailbreaking in the first place.
Apple have been very firm on their position though, and it doesn’t look like they are going to back down anytime soon. Plus, the situation does benefit them significantly in the end anyway, as it allows them to have full control over the app market on iOS devices. The company does allow users to sideload apps under some conditions, but it’s far from allowing the installation of completely custom software.
