Tennis Hall-of-Famer and winner of eight Grand Slam titles Andre Agassi would like to really see fellow American and women’s tennis superstar Serena Williams surpass the number of major titles that his wife Steffi Graf held during her career.
At 33 years old, Serena Williams is the World N o. 1 in women’s tennis and after winning her 19th Grand Slam titles during the 2015 Australian Open in Melbourne Park in January, she just trails Steffi Graf by three more.
Williams is now third in the all-time list of women tennis players with the most number of Grand Slam titles. Steffi is at second with 22, and she trails Australian Margaret Court who had a total of 24 Grand Slam titles in her professional career, details Stuff.co.nz.
Agassi disclosed that his wife Steffi is not even alarmed at all that her record might be surpassed by Serena next year if the tennis superstar keeps her fine form the rest of the way.
He said that his German wife has had a good tennis career because she did everything she could during her time and that there were no regrets at all for her.
Agassi also said that Steffi does not fret on the breakfast table about the thought of her eventually losing her record to Serena Williams.
Records are meant to be broken
Agassi said that records are meant to be broken and he and his wife are definitely excited to see Serena Williams topping Graf’s or even Court’s accomplishments.
Serena is only 33 years old and has a lot of good tennis ahead of her. If she keeps up with her level of play within the next two years, she can actually surpass Graf’s record of 22 by early next year and Court’s 24 by late next year.
The American tennis superstar has actually appeared in 23 Grand Slam finals where she won 19 and lost four.
With 19 Grand Slam titles to her name, she is actually two majors better than Roger Federer who has 17 and another American tennis Hall-of-Famer Pete Sampras who had 16.
The American World No. 1 in women’s tennis is touted to rule the next Grand Slam event at Wimbledon and also heavily favored to lord over the US Open late in August.
She is weakest, by her standards, in the French Open where she won only two times in the last 15 years.
The closest among active women tennis players to the number of Grand Slam titles that Serena has at the moment is her sister Venus with seven majors to her name and Russia’s Maria Sharapova with five.
Agassi said that Serena is arguably the best ever in women’s tennis regardless of whether she compiles 22 Grand Slam titles or more during her career. And he would be very happy to see Serena prove that she can really do it.
