“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is still in a mid-season pause until the beginning of March, and fans have taken the opportunity to talk about the possible upcoming developments in the show, which is pretty typical when major productions like this are in this situation. For now, it seems like many are interested to see what will happen between Simmons and Fitz, and the new episodes of the show could actually improve the relationship of the two characters, something which most fans would apparently be happy to see.
This is coming from an official report about the show made by Elizabeth Henstridge herself, who plays the role of Agent Simmons. She stated that fans should prepare themselves to see a reunion between the two characters, but she didn’t want to give any specific details about how that would proceed. All she had to say was that her character was grieving deeply from the recent events, and she will eventually have to come to terms with what happened and the fact that she was the one who lived.
Losing a loved one is never easy, and it must be even more difficult when the circumstances of that loss also put a feeling of guilt and burden on the person. These issues will likely be explored in more detail once the show returns, and it sounds like we could see a more interesting side to the personalities of both Simmons and Fitz as a result of that.
Fitz himself is going to be very supportive of his partner, and he will be with her every step of the way, refusing to let her go. On the other hand, Simmons apparently realizes that she wants to be with him and he’s the one for her, but she doesn’t want to submit to those feelings just yet as she’s feeling confused over what happened with Will. In the end though, Simmons is one of the stronger characters on this show and we expect that the writers will come up with an interesting way to bring her back up after all that’s happened.
The theme of dealing with guilt will be a recurring one throughout the season, from what we can tell, as Simmons will not be the only one affected by such feelings. Agent Coulson will also reportedly have to figure out where he stands in life after his conflict with Ward, and reports about the show paint a very dark picture for the character.
From what we’ve been able to tell, he’s going to go through a very difficult period where he will be constantly blaming himself for everything that has happened, and he will be going over the events in his head time after time. It is true that his actions were a bit harsh and he may have made the wrong choice in the eyes of some, but the important thing is that his own character comes to terms with what has happened.
Making things even more problematic, the reactions of everyone around Coulson could be counterproductive to his recovery, as others will apparently not really share his views that what he did was wrong, or at least will not voice those concerns very strongly. It seems like this is not exactly what Coulson wanted to happen, and this will drive him further down into the hole of negativity. How deep exactly he’s going to go is hard to tell, and “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is a production that can sometimes make things very tough for its characters.
