Acid reflux is a condition that affects a large part of the population, and yet not a lot of people even realize they’re actually suffering from anything. In most cases, the symptoms are attributed to overeating, bad food, or something along those lines – but if left untreated, it can get much more serious than those mild symptoms, and cause a lot of discomfort in one’s life. People suffering from more difficult cases of acid reflux have reported being unable to sleep for hours at night, severe pain, and more.
And now, it seems that a new way for dealing with the condition has been discovered, and is on its way to the mainstream public. It’s not a type of medication – it’s actually an implant, called LINX. The device is placed near the esophagus of the patient, and, with the help of magnetic mechanisms, controls the contractions of the esophagus. This, according to those behind the invention, can fully resolve the issues of most people suffering from the condition.
The problem, they stated, stems from the fact that improperly functioning esophagus valves are causing acid from the stomach to come back up into the chest and throat, which the device can completely prevent. There has reportedly already been success in using it to treat even more severe cases of the condition, and it seems that this could potentially be one of the leading types of treatment for acid reflux in the future.
And according to experts, it’s indeed important to treat acid reflux seriously, as it’s not simply a matter of discomfort for the patient – the condition can have actual lasting repercussions on one’s health, and damage cells beyond repair. In some cases, this can lead to much more serious conditions, including certain types of cancer.
The new procedure does require some advanced surgery, and patients have to be sedated during the operation, but according to reports, recovery is relatively quick and trouble-free, so most patients shouldn’t run into any issues during the process.
Identifying the condition early on is important. Heartburn is one of the major symptom of acid reflux, accompanied by trouble swallowing, pain in the chest, as well as the sensation of a lump in the throat. Knowing when one is dealing with acid burn is made challenging by the fact that these symptoms are often associated with a variety of other conditions, so it can be hard to tell when the root cause is acid burn, or when something else is at play that the patient doesn’t suspect. In any case, any instance of experiencing those symptoms for a prolonged period should be checked out by a physician at all cost.
