Over the past couple of years, Hollywood has found a way of capitalizing on previous blockbusters. Instead of merely adding to the story of a previous smash hit by developing long-overdue sequels, film outfits opt for a remake, which is commonly dubbed these days as reboot.
“Ghostbusters,” a science fantasy comedy movie that was shown in 1984 starring Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver, was such a blockbuster that a sequel “Ghostbusters 2” was released five years later, which was also very successful at the tills.
More than 20 years after “Ghostbusters 2,” the original cast members planned of doing a third movie but because of the demise of Harold Ramis, the project was entirely shelved for good.
Now, 31 years after the first “Ghostbusters” film was shown on theaters, pre-filming production has begun for the “Ghostbusters” movie reboot.
All-female cast
But instead of maintaining the same casting pattern, the “Ghostbusters” movie reboot shall have an all-female cast.
The movie was actually announced in October by Director Paul Feig and on January 27, he named the all-female cast of “Ghostbusters” movie reboot via Twitter. The female team of “Ghostbusters” who shall be equipping themselves with the proton packs include Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, reports Rolling Stone.
The movie is set to be released on theaters on July 22, 2016.
While negotiations are still ongoing between the producing company and the four actresses, Director Feig was too confident that the stars would sign up for “Ghostbusters” movie reboot.
Filming for the movie shall commence this coming summer based on the script written by Feig himself and Katie Dippold, screenwriter of “The Heat.”
Not planning to ruin memory of first “Ghostbusters” film
When Feig announced “Ghostbusters” movie in October, he specifically mentioned that the film was a reboot and not “Ghostbusters 3.” He explained that he loved the first “Ghostbusters” so much that he does not want to ruin its memory.
Instead of adding to the storyline of the first two Ghostbusters movie, Feig decided to just restart it altogether to give the film new dynamics and adopt technologies that would make the film even cooler and scarier too. He also disclosed that he is planning something for the movie that has not happened in today’s world and would surprise everybody.
Bill Murray, the major lead of the “Ghostbusters” movies expressed his support for an all-female cast of the movie reboot of “Ghostbusters” as early as last year. He recommended four female stars for the film including Wiig, McCarthy, Emma Stone, and Linda Cardellini.
As it turned out, Wiig and McCarthy got the part. Wiig said that she will do anything whatever Bill Murray tells her to do as her show of gratitude to the actor. McKinnon and Jones, on the other hand, were taken from Saturday Night Live.
