It’s been known for a while that eczema never comes alone, and tends to be accompanied by a variety of other conditions. Statistically, many patients suffering from eczema also have problems with other aspects of their physical well-being – but more recently, another pattern has started to emerge in research, which was not so obvious before. It would appear that those who develop eczema are also more likely to have certain kinds of mental disorders, leading to a potentially risky lifestyle.
Recent research shows that eczema patients are also typically predisposed to eating disorders, particularly leaning towards obesity. Many of those diagnosed with eczema were also obese, some severely, and many patients also had diabetes or were in a pre-diabetes stage. Heart conditions were also not rare among eczema patients, and most of them were observed to also suffer from high blood pressure, although that’s logical, given the other surrounding factors related to the condition.
Perhaps more problematically, those with the condition also tend to be heavier drinkers and/or smokers, which is not just harmful on its own, but particularly dangerous when combined with the above mentioned predisposition towards heart-related conditions. Alcohol and tobacco are among the major contributors to diseases of the heart, and it seems that the substances are particularly dangerous to those suffering from eczema. It’s not known if their effects become cumulatively worse when combined with the negative effects of eczema, but it’s not unlikely.
Of course, there is a silver lining in all of this – these are just predispositions, nobody is born with an alcohol or smoking problem. The new discoveries simply mean that those who know that they have problems with eczema should be extra careful around substances like that. Moderate use can be acceptable for most people, but the knowledge that there is a higher chance to get addicted to such substances should always be in the back of eczema patients’ minds.
Eczema is still a relatively mysterious condition – even though a lot more is being uncovered about it all the time, there are still lots of major question marks surrounding it, and patients who have been diagnosed with eczema should always take care to keep themselves informed of any recent developments in the field. Science not only comes up with new ways to attack the condition regularly, but we also learn important new details about eczema as well, such as the ones listed above. To some, such knowledge could come as a bit of a burden, but in the end, it’s definitely better to know what one’s body and mind could be hiding in the long run, so there are no surprises in health aspects.
