‘Bourne 5’ Release Date, Cast & Plot: Matt Damon Returning as Jason Bourne!

Matt Damon will be reprising his role as Jason Bourne in the upcoming fifth installment of the very successful action movie franchise, adapted from the book of novelist Robert Ludlum.

It can be recalled that Damon starred in the first three films of the series starting with “Bourne Identity” shown in 2002, “Bourne Supremacy” released two years later, and “The Bourne Ultimatum” shown in 2007.

He only missed the fourth movie in the series shown in 2012 with Jeremy Renner taking the movie’s lead role on his behalf.

Box-office blockbusters

“Bourne Identity” made a worldwide box office haul of over $214 million in 2002. Two years later, the “Bourne Supremacy” grossed over $288 million worldwide. The “Bourne Supremacy” as if consistent with its title, is the highest grossing film in the series, with a box-office take of nearly $442 million worldwide in 2007

Jeremy Renner’s take on the series in “Bourne Legacy” also fared well, amassing box-office gross of $276 million.

With the return of Damon to the franchise, both the producers at Universal Pictures and the fans are getting excited over the next potential blockbuster. Many are already thinking that the movie is not just a potential but a guaranteed blockbuster when it is released in theaters worldwide.

Release date out

Universal Pictures just announced on January 7 that the fifth Bourne movie, which has yet to have an official title, already has a final release date. It’s going to be on July 29, 2016, reports IGN.

The release date was a change from an earlier announcement that “Bourne 5” will be hitting theaters on July 14, 2016. The move was a result of the decision of 20th Century Fox to move the showing of “Planet of the Apes 3,” which originally had the July 29, 2016 release date, to July 14, 2017, thus delaying Matt Damon’s return as Jason Bourne by a mere two weeks.

Along with Damon, Paul Greengrass will also be returning to direct the fifth movie of the franchise. He also directed “Bourne Supremacy” and “Bourne Ultimatum.”

Producers Frank Marshall, Jeffery Weiner, and Captive Entertainment shall also be returning for “Bourne 5” who shall also be co-produced by Matt Damon, Paul Greengrass and Greg Goodman.

Damon and Greengrass will actually be wearing three hats in the movie as they will also co-write the screenplay along with Christopher Rouse.

Storyline

There has not been an official storyline announced yet about “Bourne 5” but it would likely focus on the return of Jason Bourne, who was missing in action in Moscow during the fourth movie.

Jeremy Renner did not replace Damon as Jason Bourne in “Bourne Legacy” but played the role of Aaron Cross, a government operative assigned to a black ops program of the Department of Defense that somehow went haywire.

If the storylines of the previous Bourne movies would be the basis, then “Bourne 5” will also be full of double-dealings and double-crossings but with the usual pack of non-stop action and suspense all the way.
