American Horror Story Freak Show creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk and their entire team have created a series that offers something new every season. The fans can never expect what the story will deal with. This season, the series deals with the freaks – people with abnormal deformities and a show with them, in the 1950s.
There are some actors who have returned for different seasons in the role of a different character and have made a huge impact on the viewers. In American Horror Story Freak Show, Denis O’Hare has created a memorable character with his portrayal of Stanley.
The Tony Award-winning actor has had a memorable stint in the Broadway and is very pleased with his role and the writers of the American Horror Story Freak Show. He calls the series progressive for not being afraid to deal with issues that society doesn’t always want to be placed face to face with.
The creators Brad and Ryan have always tried to push themselves further to create a social awareness or use a plot that will prick the audience’s conscience. This time with the American Horror Story Freak Show, they have drawn attention to the societal notions of physical abnormalities. They focus on the notions of freak and normal and who decides what is what. This season, the producers have gone a step forward by dealing with the issue of homosexuality as well.
American Horror Story Freak Show deals with two characters that are gay – Dell and Stanley. It shows how the two deal with this “abnormality”. Dell is a closet homosexual, who can never come to terms with his sexuality and eventually ends up hanging himself, for he feels death is an easy way out than face society of the 1950s where being gay was a crime.
Stanley, played by O’Hare is, on the other hand, more comfortable with his sexuality and has come to terms with it. He is a professional liar and hires hustlers for his physical satisfaction, but he accepts his abnormalities rather than seek an escape from it. He has physical abnormalities that make him a freak for the society at large, but he knows that that is who he is, and there is no way out.
Denis O’Hare says that Stanley was one of the normal characters in American Horror Story Freak Show, but it was a great challenge trying to portray a character this complex and who is such a big con man. Stanley murders the freaks one by one in the show and not for once loses his nerves, and O’Hare said he enjoyed the role.
