Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Fight:  A 67-33 Purse Split in Favor of Money Should Make the Bout Happen!

As always in boxing, negotiations for how much each pugilist would receive at the end of a bout, is key to finalizing a fight and subsequently arranging a date in the ring.

With negotiations for the Manny Pacquiao – Floyd Mayweather fight reportedly on its high gear, it would not be surprising if the focal point of it all is the purse split between the two most popular boxers in the world today.

Had the fight happened five years ago, a 50-50 split would have been the ideal financial scenario. Since then, Mayweather has remained unbeaten. But Pacquiao suffered two losses, including a devastating knockout from the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez.

Pacquiao’s loss to Timothy Bradley was a fluke and he proved it in their return bout almost two years later.

Because of his two losses in the last three years, the ring value of Pacman has already diminished and this was obvious with the steep drop in the pay-per-view (PPV) buy-ins of his recent fights, which according to East Side Boxing, is now below 500,000.

That’s a far cry from the PPV buy-ins of Mayweather fights, which are making 875,000 to 900,000.

That being said, Mayweather is right when he said during his pronouncement in December 2014 that Pacquiao should not have a say in the financial terms of the fight. Money should call the shots on that aspect. In the subsequent pronouncement of Pacquiao, he seems amenable with that condition too, if only to make the fight happen. Although both did not specifically state the purse split that they see as ideal.

Asking for an 80-20 split?

While there has been no official word from Mayweather and his camp about their desired purse split for the bout, there are rumors that Money is eyeing an 80-20 deal in his favor for him to agree to the $200 million or more historic fight.

If that is true, then Mayweather must be way over his head to think that he can get another $200 million or more from another fight other than with Pacquiao. Money should consider the fact that without the Pacman, there is no $200 million or more purse to split.

Factoring in the recent drop in Mayweather’s PPV buys, East Side Boxing opines that the ideal sharing for the historic bout would be 67-33, in favor of Money. For Mayweather to get something like $134 million or more in a fight that would last no more than an hour, that is quite a financial windfall already, in any sports.

manny pacquiao

Pacquiao should be happy getting $66 million or more too since that is certainly more than what he is wishing for. What’s more important to him, if he is being true to himself, is to finally get a fight with Mayweather and give the world’s boxing fans the fight that they have long wanted to see.

But until the two boxers finally sign below the dotted line, the world’s historic boxing fight is just a theory, a long-running theory that is.

  1. 80-20 is a stick up, why not winner take-all? If Mayweather and company believe that Manny has no chance of winning against him, then go for a winner take-all.

  2. 90-10 purse-split to the winner if Floyd manned-up 5 years ago, and he would have retired since then.

  3. Boxing fans are the ones that determine who gets how much for a fight and who they should fight. It’s the fans hard earned money that pays a boxers prize money, gate revenue and PPV.

    FLOYDCOTT! FLOYDCOTT! FLOYDCOTT!!!

We want a Floyd vs Manny fight and both fighters should be paid equitably for the highest grossing boxing event in the history of the sport and it is all because of boxing fans.

    FLOYDCOTT! FLOYDCOTT! FLOYDCOTT!!!
    FLOYDCOTT! FLOYDCOTT! FLOYDCOTT!!!
    FLOYDCOTT! FLOYDCOTT! FLOYDCOTT!!!

  4. It should be the other way around. Nobody watches Floyd anymore. Pacman is the most searched athlete in the world. 48M households watched last Pacman’s fight. LasVegas is dead during Floyd fights

  5. it should be 50/50 but just to have the fight 60-40 is more realisitic..Floyd is undefeated but Manny is more exciting…

  6. I have a proposition. Since ppv numbers are determined by the quality of opponents why don’t we base ppv cuts on common opponents:

    Pacman vs:

    ODLH 1.25M
    Fatton 1.28M
    Marquez 1.41M
    Mosley 1.3M
    Cotto 1.25M

    = 6.49M

    Maynever vs:

    ODLH 2.4M
    Fatton .85M
    Marquez 1M
    Mosley 1.4M
    Cotto 1.5M

    = 7.15M

    PERCENTAGE CUTS:

    MAYNEVER 52%
    PACQUIAO 48%

  7. the reason this fight is that big financially is not just because of mayweather but pacquiao too who is unquestionably more popular as attested by de la hoya himself recently. so no less than 60/40 split is fair enough with pacquiao conceding 10 for mayweather. we can’t base split decision on the ppv numbers because it won’t be fair since the fight was not done in same place. It’s fair If both fights was in Macau where pacquiao fought. Mayweather fights were in US thats why his PPV number is higher which is expected.

  8. PACQUIAO NEEDS TO BE CREATIVE AND GO ON A MEDIA BLITZ

if he must appear on espn and other leading sports shows, so be it if only to state “BROTHERS ARE NO COWARDS SO WHY IS FLOYD DODGING ME?” and solicit their help so the fight can happen. pacquiao needs to force the issue and make floyd pay a terrible price should he continue to refuse to fight him.

CBS should sue floyd for everything he’s got for refusing to fight the fight that will make it money to justify what CBS paid floyd. I refuse to believe TEAM ASHKINAZI will allow team mayweather`leave them holding the empty bag without retribution.

  9. Maywather claimed that it should be the same way in terms of splitting as it was when he fought De la Joya the first time. But that was the beginning to make a name for himself. De la Joya was the superstar at that time. Today the case is different and therefore should not be his basis. Pacquiao has made a name for himself too. Although he suffered a devastating loss, he still remain on top as the only boxer to give the sport the highest possibility to make history. If it’s not Pacquiao, will Mayweather be possible to demand hundreds of millions of dollars? And the history everyone is talking about? In fairness, an A+ for Mayweather and A for Pacquiao or its equivalent.

  10. That’s a ridiculous purse sharing. 60-40 is ideal. It just shows that Mayweather doesnt like to fight Pacquiao!!! He’s too greedy!!! It might backfire

  11. That’s too low. Its should be at least 55-45 slit. Mayweather has no lost because he choose his opponents and Manny Pacquiao is an eight division Champion only in boxing history) and he do not choose his opponents.

  12. Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t pac say he would fight mayweather for free?? So why not take the fight at a 70-30 split?

  13. Tony used fake numbers for common opponents. Use revenue to determine not ppv numbers…heres both on common opponents

Mayweather de la hoya 140 million in revenue 2.4 million ppv buys
Pacquaio de la hoya 69.5 million in revenue 1.2 million ppv buys

Mayweather vs hatton 62 million in revenue 920k ppv buys
Pacquiao vs hatton 59 million in revenue 850k ppv buys

Mayweather marquez 66 million in revenue 1.05 million ppv buys
Pacquiao marquez 3 73 million in revenue 1.3 million ppv buys

Mayweather mosley 78 million in revenue 1.45 million ppv buys
Pacquiao mosley 69.5 million in revenue 1.15 million ppv buys

Mayweather cotto 103 million in revenue 1.5 million ppv buys
Pacquiao cotto. 71 million in revenue 1.25 million ppv buys

So as tony said we should use common opponents…unfortunately now that the truth in numbers has been put up, tony will no longer agree to this.

If u people cant see its bob arum blocking the fight then your blind.
