Could Fans See a Half Life Movie before Half Life 3

The mere mention of “Half-Life” is enough to get the Internet buzzing for days lately, especially if there’s a “3” in there as well. And while the most recent official “announcement” about Valve’s next game ended up somewhat disappointing – as Valve confirmed that the title has been put on pause while they’re focusing on other projects – something else was revealed recently which might come as a big surprise to many.

Valve and J.J. Abrams have confirmed that a “Half-Life” movie is being produced, although they didn’t specify anything about the project’s current progress. It’s not known if they’re already far ahead in it, or if they’ve just started planning, but the news is certainly exciting to many. It’s also not clear what kind of story the film will tell – “Half-Life” as a whole has seen a long, extensive plotline so far, and it would be hard to cram it all into a single film. On the other hand, the film may not even be an adaptation of any part of the games at all, instead telling a new story that ties in with “Half-Life” and its world in a canon way.

Fans have also been wondering how Valve and Abrams are going to pull this off in general, as one of the main defining features of “Half-Life” has been the protagonist’s silence. The story in all games is told entirely through the eyes of Gordon Freeman, from start to finish – the original “Half-Life” was actually highly praised for managing to tell a story without a single cutscene (with one very minor exception), nor a single line spoken by the main character, a trend that carried over to the next installments.

This idea may work great for a game, but it’s a completely different story when a movie is involved – having a silent protagonist doesn’t really work that well in that medium. At least there are some great possibilities for actors who can play Gordon, and Abrams will certainly not have any difficulty with the film’s casting when it comes to that.

Half-Life 3

This isn’t the first time a “Half-Life” film has been discussed publicly, although it’s certainly the first time Valve have agreed to such a project. In a notorious past incident, Uwe Boll expressed interest in making a film based on the franchise, to which Gabe Newell replied very unenthusiastically. There’s actually a joke section about that in Valve’s own official Developer Wiki, which has a page containing various famous answers by Gabe Newell. When asked about Uwe Boll making a “Half-Life” movie, his response was reportedly “Uh, no. And whoever is winding people up with this rumor, please stop giving out my home phone number.”
