The Terminator Franchise Will Always be Back

Arnold Schwarzenegger claims that we should expect more Terminator movies!

Seems like we wrote off both the Terminator franchise and Schwarzenegger’s iconic role in them way too soon. And no, these are not speculations, information came from Arnold himself!

The franchise that began with a seemingly indestructible humanoid cyborg sent from the year 2029 to 1984 with a mission to kill a waitress whose unborn son will lead humanity in a war that will help humans to defeat the machines, has lived on for much longer than anyone could have guessed at the time of its release.

Over the years, many derivative sequels came to the big screen, but the franchise was never again as successful as it was during its first three movies.

As it pushed through more and more sequels that started being less and less original, audiences all over the world tried really hard to kill it, but the Terminator franchise seems unkillable. After Terminator Salvation, everyone expected that further explorations of this world will be impossible, but Paramount found a way to come back with Terminator: Genisys.

Unfortunately, the critics butchered this film, and the audiences ignored it, which meant it’s box office result was a mere $440 million worldwide. It’s not really a flop, but, with a $155 million budget, when all is said and done, and advertising, print, and the theater’s cut are taken into account, it probably barely broke even.

A little while ago, various media outlets published news that Arnold Schwarzenegger left the Terminator franchise forever, and all based on the fact that Paramount decided to scrap the Terminator Genisys sequel, and seemingly choose to make a different Terminator film completely.

Following up on that, producer and CEO of production company Skydance, David Ellison, quickly clarified that the Terminator series are not done for, at least not yet, claiming that they have “an incredibly bright future”. Even if (to our disappointment) that future is not going to involve Genisys 2.

So, ok, Terminator is not ending, and instead of getting the long-expected sequel, it seems that we are in for a ride that will include Arnold Schwarzenegger. In a new interview with Fandango, Schwarzenegger said “I don’t want to call it, like, fake news, like the president, calls it, but I think people just write things – I have no idea why.

Just because Paramount doesn’t want to pick up the Terminator franchise, you have 15 other studios willing to do it – that doesn’t mean the Terminator franchise is finished, right?”

So, even if we are not certain what is in store for the epic franchise, his statement does confirm that Paramount is done with it. Schwarzenegger also added that “it just means they are on their way to negotiate with another studio, but I can’t give you the details of that. They’ll announce that. But, yes, the Terminator franchise is never finished. And remember that after 2018, James Cameron is getting it back, and then it will continue on!”

Arnie also said that he is interested in making another Terminator film.

terminator franchise will never finishFrom what we know, it seems like James Cameron remains involved in the development of a sequel, and that Deadpool’s Tim Miller is linked with directing of this upcoming sequel. Sadly, we will probably not see Cameron at the helm of the next Terminator movie, because his next five years will be dedicated to creating four Avatar sequels.

Even though many have written off the franchise because there hasn’t been a fantastic Terminator movie since T2, Cameron sounded pretty optimistic about making a relevant sequel that will awaken the interest of modern audiences when he spoke about his idea earlier this year: “In a time when people are being absorbed by their virtual-social world, I mean, just look around. I always say: if Terminator was about the war between the humans and the machines, look around any restaurant or airport lounge and tell me the machines haven’t won when every human you see is enslaved to their device. So could you make a relevant Terminator film now? Absolutely.”

So, what happens next? There is an option that Skydance will stay on as a producer while a different studio picks up the distribution rights. Our guess is that 20th Century Fox will be the one since they have been behind James Cameron ever since Titanic.

As soon as we get some more news on Terminator 6, we will let you know!
