LG haven’t yet said when the G4 is coming out, although information about the device has already been leaking in various forms, and it seems that the company hasn’t been very successful in keeping their secrets under wraps. And from what Internet readers have seen so far, the device is a phone/tablet combo that will be packed full of features and powerful hardware – but perhaps more interestingly, recent reports indicate that the device might be aimed at competing with Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4.
It’s rumored that the new device will have a stylus, dubbed the “G Pen”, which is an obvious take on Samsung’s S-Pen, it seems. This is still unconfirmed, although it’s coming from a source that seems moderately legitimate, so there’s a good chance that the rumor might be true. However, if LG really are planning to do that, they should probably spend more time designing and developing the new stylus, as the last one – the one in the LG G3 – wasn’t received very warmly by most critics.
On the inside, the device will have some impressive hardware, including 3 GB of RAM (with a rumored 4 GB variant also coming up), and a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor running at 3 GHz. It will also ship with Android 5.0 Lollipop, which should be expected at this point. A flagship device coming out in 2015 should have no excuse for running a lower version of Android, not to mention one with such impressive hardware. Interestingly enough, rumors say that the 3 GB / 4 GB versions will be split between the 32 GB / 64 GB internal storage models, respectively. It doesn’t make that much sense to tie operating memory to storage memory, although it’s possible that LG have a plan with that.
Among the more noteworthy interesting features, the device will also reportedly have a water-resistant body. This is actually becoming a relatively standard feature among high-end smartphones lately, and even though some critics have been calling it a gimmick (more or less universally across all devices), it still has its benefits for some users, particularly those who like to travel a lot and bring their devices along for pictures.
With a rumored price tag of $650 – $700, this won’t be a phone for any random user, it’s a device for those who clearly know what they want from their smartphone and need more processing power than the average consumer. It definitely looks like LG are diving in head-first to compete with Samsung in this market, and they have a pretty serious task ahead of them if they want to truly capture the hearts of Samsung fans.
