Celebrities dropped out of Donald Trump’s inauguration festivities, but they were there in hordes for the Women’s March organized in Washington a day after Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States of America. The Washington Post reported that celebrities like Scarlett Johansson, Janelle Monáe, Ashley Judd would be a part of the demonstration.
Activists like Angela Davies, Michael Moore, Gloria Steinem, Muriel E. Bowser came forward to speak to the crowd. Millions of people gathered in the cold to show solidarity and express their dislike for the President.
According to reports, the number of individuals at the Women’s March was triple the number of people who attended the inaugural ceremony at the White House. The purpose of the march was to display a public resentment of the new President, especially about his negative comments on the position of women.
The organizers of the Women’s March made it very clear that the gathering organized was a march or a rally and wasn’t a protest of any sort. The emphasis wasn’t on slamming President Trump, but to emphasize women’s right as fundamental human rights.
The march drew a lot of attention from the world media and what captured the attention were the interesting placards on display. The posters advocated free speech, freedom of religion, the importance of brotherhood and solidarity and extending support and solidarity to minority communities who have repeatedly come under attack from Trump.
Forbes reported that the Women’s March was unique in the way it brought in little kids and babies. Mothers came to attend the March along with their babies in tow. There were kids in strollers, or walking with their parents, or sitting on the shoulders of their parents and relatives.
Reports suggest that the March reflected the sentiments of the public and highlighted the brighter future of the country. These children, being open to such sensitive issues, will grow up to become better citizens.
Teenagers who couldn’t vote this time round said that they have come out to support the cause so that they never have to face a similar situation during their times. These movements also serve to educate the public and help them a more informed and conscious decision in the next election.
Hollywood came out in strong support of the marchers. America Ferrera chaired the artist table at the March and said that as artists and women in America, it is important that they all stand together in solidarity for the protection of their rights and dignity. Ferrera added that if they worked together, then they might still have the chance to protect the soul of their country.
Scarlett Johansson and Amy Schumer spoke against Trump. They have always been outspoken supporters of Planned Parenthood and said that the attacks on the reproductive choice by the Republican government was terrifying. Johansson added that once the weight of the election subsides, they might realize that what they have started will go a long way in making the citizens involved and allow them to stay active in their respective communities.
Madonna, Hellen Mirren, Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, Jane Fonda, Alec Baldwin, Drew Barrymore, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Mandy Moore, Charlize Theron, Emma Watson were some of the celebrities who attended the Women’s March.
Apart from Hollywood stars, several Canadian celebrities also joined the march. NasraAdem, K.D Lang, Sandra Jansen and Francyne Joe among others supported the Women’s March in Washington.
Gloria Steinem addressed the marchers at the Women’s March and sad that the Constitution of the country doesn’t have any place for the sole right of the president. It talks about the people and works for their benefit.
