Avatar performed admirably back in 2009. In fact, it did too great and accumulated a huge fan base. Therefore, it is no doubt that a sequel will be coming soon. In fact, James Cameron, the director, decided to take a few more steps forward and announced three more follow-ups to the saga. This will make sure that there is a fifth movie in the Avatar series.
However, it has been seven years, and we are yet to see an Avatar movie again. It was recently implied that the sequel might finally arrive in 2018. However, if that turns out to be true, Sigourney Weaver seems to have certain doubts about it. She played Dr. Grace Augustine in the first movie.
An untitled film was scheduled by 20th Century Fox, and it was taken from Lightstorm Entertainment, while being scheduled to release on 21st December 2018. A lot of people are suspecting that this might be Avatar 2.
Sigourney Weaver recently spoke to THR about it. According to her, they haven’t started it, so she doesn’t have an idea about how realistic or authentic the date is but she thinks it will be quite exciting.
If we assume that the Lightstorm Entertainment movie will be Avatar 2, they have a little over two years for the entire process to properly unfold. James Cameron might have spent the last seven years finalizing and perfecting the visual effects for the franchise; the movie still needs to be completed and lots of time needs to be dedicated for post-production.
In the case of a standard blockbuster, two years is sufficient to complete everything. However, considering the heavy effects nature of Avatar, it is surprising to apprehend that the development hasn’t kicked off yet.
It doesn’t mean that Avatar 2 can’t be completed by 2018, but it makes sense that it does question how they might pull it off. The latest question surrounding the movie is whether Avatar 2 will make this unconfirmed release date. There have been no leaks regarding official plot details other than Cameron confirming that they will follow Neytiri, Sully, and their children. Sigourney Weaver will return for the sequel in spite of Christine Augustine dying in. However, it is not sure as to what capacity she will be returning in.
On a surprising note, she did read the sequel scripts for the next three Avatar movies and found them a lot more interesting than the first one, regarding scope at least. This is especially because Cameron was able to provide more groundwork in the first movie so as to have more fun with others.
Moreover, she isn’t the only actor who will be returning to the franchise in spite of their character dying. Stephen Lang will be making a return as well. He played Colonel Miles Quaritch in the first movie.
In the end, the movie has been delayed multiple times but for now it looks like James Cameron is targeting a release date in 2018. The ETA is being thrown out by Fox for quite some time and on last month; they finally took the step of properly claiming the year-end slot.
Sadly, Avatar fans already know that Cameron is quite adept at blowing deadlines. Moreover, Sigourney Weaver isn’t so sure that he is going to abide with this one either. Back in November, 21st December 2018 was reserved by Fox for a project to be produced by James Cameron.
