Tesla are making significant progress on the auto market, and even though there were lots of skeptics about their potential to succeed in the past, those voices are all but gone now. Elon Musk has proven that his plan works, and now that the company has established its presence on the market, they have been moving forward quite fast to release their next big model and to grab an even larger chunk of the market share.
What will the Tesla Model 3 bring to the table, and will it continue the company’s winning trend? There is currently a lot of anticipation for the model, and looking at the preorders alone, Tesla have struck a goldmine with this release.
Reports indicate that there are already nearly half a million requests to purchase the Tesla Model 3 once it’s released, and this has been working wonders for the company’s finances and their performance on the market as a whole.
With their profits climbing up at impressive rates, Tesla have also been able to afford some more interesting additions to the design of the Model 3, and they haven’t been shy to talk about them either. One of the more interesting aspects of the car that’s been in the news a lot lately, is the special high-tech glass it uses, with the material being developed entirely in-house.
In fact, Tesla have apparently launched an entire internal program dedicated to developing new glass materials for use in their cars, and this is one of the first results of that effort. It’s not clear if Tesla are aiming to produce glass to be sold to other manufacturers, or if they will only be servicing their own needs, but in any case, it’s not a bad idea for branching out on this market.
The new glass is not only exceptionally strong, but also a much more economic option than previous solutions, according to reports. It’s apparently easy and cheap to produce in large volumes, so we expect this to reflect nicely on the production costs of the Model 3.
It makes sense for the company to develop something like this for the Model 3 too, looking at previews of the car’s design. It’s glass all over the body, and Tesla could probably save a lot of money by improving the cost of their manufacturing for this part of the car.
Tesla have put a lot of effort into the development of this new glass, and they’ve even crossed paths with some of Apple’s engineers, according to reports. It will be interesting to see how the product performs on the market and if it manages to establish a reputation of its own, similar to Corning’s Gorilla Glass which became the industry standard for smartphones.
But of course, glass is far from the main aspect of a car’s design, and many people are hoping the Model 3 will be able to live up to the already huge expectations of the crowds towards the model. The previous releases by the company made it clear that they value the quality of their work, but that was easy enough to prove when they were working on more expensive luxury models.
Now that the company is making the shift to the cheaper budget market, the stakes are much higher. People already have high expectations towards Tesla’s models, but on the other hand, the company is also aiming to invest less in the production of the new Model 3, in order to make it more widely accessible.
