According to reports, the stock shortage in the official stores could be attributed to the fact that many eBay sellers are buying multiple copies of the SteelBook with the intention of reselling them on eBay. This is not an uncommon strategy when limited editions are involved, and there’s generally no easy way to stop it. Tying purchases to individual accounts has traditionally been a clumsy and not very effective solution.
The official SteelBook sells for $19.99 at Best Buy, which is not a bad price for a limited edition of the film, but eBay sellers have been going nearly crazy with their own pricing, selling their copies for anywhere from double to triple the original price. Those who’re interested in the SteelBook and haven’t been able to obtain a copy from Best Buy may end up having to pay as much as $60 on eBay, and the price has been rising steadily as the official copies have been running out.
“Guardians of the Galaxy” has so far been a very successful release for Marvel, earning them a total of $771 million across all editions of the film ever since it came out on August 1, according to reports. Reviews have been mostly positive as well, while the opinions of fans have been even better. It’s clear that Marvel have done a great job on this release, however, some have been criticizing them lately for the way they have handled the release of the limited edition. In any case, the situation is not that unusual for a film with a special edition.
