Season 1 of the American musical drama TV series “The Get Down” premiered in one bundle on Netflix on August 12, 2016, yet fans have already been talking about its second season, barely days and weeks after its six-episode debut season was streamed.
While there were speculations that the show could be canceled for Season 2 because of the huge expense entailed in its production while gaining not-so-good ratings, Director Baz Luhrmann debunked the rumors.
Those rumors were also aided by the reports saying that Jaden Smith, the son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith and who portrays Marcus ‘Dizzie’ Kipling in the TV series, also committed suicide, reports Game & Guide.
He assured that Season 2 of “The Get Down” has not been canceled and in fact the cast and crew members of the TV series are now busy filming for the second season. The cast members also include Jaden Smith, who the director said, is very much alive.
Definitely not a flop
Luhrmann is also not happy to hear the speculations saying that the TV series has flopped during its first season reportedly prompting the producers and Netflix not to renew it for Season 2.
He said that he is actually amused of the rumors going around about “The Get Down” because he is already filming Season 2.
The director added that contrary to rumors, “The Get Down” has avid followers and that it actually performed extraordinarily well during its first season. He also slammed rumors saying that the hip-hop drama is Netflix’s most expensive show produced at $122 million or about $20 million per episode.
Lurhmann also said that the internet was a funny thing, as he could tell fans that the rumors going around about “The Get Down” were absolute rubbish. He added that the show was doing extraordinarily well, with a giant fan base and a grand following.
He explained that there’s something going on in that nobody actually knows the numbers for Netflix at this time, and some people just try and make them up and report them as gospel truth.
The director also added that the show is looking for black and Latino men and women ages 18 to 21 years old. In fact, he even showed the casting call detailing the information on the recruitment of hip-hop dancers coming from any gender and age.
A time jump to the 80s
Season 1 of “The Get Down” was set in the South Bronx in the late 1970s and reports have it that the second season shall see a time jump into the early to mid-1980s which assures it of a more glorious Season 2.
Accordingly, the second season of the TV series will jump to the time of pop superstars Prince and Michael Jackson during the 80s, or about the era when disco music fell wayward on the sidelines, reports Breathecast.
The reports are also saying that Season 2 of “The Get Down” will bring in more characters in addition to Jaden Smith, Herizen Guardiola, Skylan Brooks, TJ Brown, and Justice Smith.
Luhrmann, who is also the director of the hit “Moulin Rouge” starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, is also using his personal social media account to continuously debunk the hoax about Jaden Smith’s rumored death.
He said that fans would continue to get updates about the filming of “The Get Down” Season 2 in order to show that Jaden Smith is very much alive. He recently took to Twitter to post a photo of Jaden Smith, Skylan Brooks, and TJ Brown filming a scene for Season 2 of “The Get Down.”
While the producers and Netflix have yet to make an announcement about the airing date of Season 2 of “The Get Down,” it seems likely to happen in the second half of 2017 or around August.
Critics have lauded Season 1 of “The Get Down” as a very good depiction of the Bronx in 1977 which they described as both messy and wonderful.
