Not that it still matters at this time, but had the “Rambo 5” movie been greenlit and gets to be shown in theaters, fans of the franchise would really feel it surreal to see Sylvester Stallone still doing his thing at the ripe age of 70.
In a positive way, it could be like featuring a veteran action star who may have missed a beat already but is still pouring it in. It would surely highlight the resilience of Sylvester Stallone both as an actor and a person.
But on the negative side, it could also give the impression that Sly trusted no one but himself to make good at the role which is why he opted to do it even if he is already past his action prime.
An iconic “Rambo” character deserves nothing but a big windup and a closure and it seems that the fourth movie entitled “John Rambo” already did that when he finally returned home to the US after another mission in the military junta-run country of Burma. It went back to the beginning because that was how it started in the first place with the first movie in the series entitled “First Blood.”
The first movie of the franchise was released in 1982 while the fourth movie was shown in 2008. That was already a span of 26 years and another movie to be shown in 2018, would make John Rambo spending all his 36 years of life doing the same thing all over again, which no longer makes sense.
“First Blood” started it all but it was the second movie shown in 1985 which catapulted the franchise to newfound heights, notes AV Club.
The third and fourth movies simply joined the bandwagon and built on to the legacy of the Rambo character.
The TV series is also dead
There were reports last year saying that “Rambo 5” was being considered by veteran Hollywood action star Sylvester Stallone after he officially made an announcement late in 2014 that the movie was a go.
The hype about “Rambo 5” lasted all the way to the end of 2015 but at the onset of 2016, Stallone publicly came out to say that he is done with the franchise and that he can no longer do another film about his iconic character.
He said that the mind is willing but the body is saying that it would be better for him to just stay home. Stallone just turned 70 years old last July. He was also quoted as saying back then that it would be better for him to relinquish the character to someone who is young and is willing to step up to the plate and face the challenge.
Around that time also, there were reports saying that Fox has been talking with several producers including Stallone for the TV version of “Rambo” that was even titled as “Rambo: New Blood,” possibly featuring the son of John Rambo.
It was also reported then that the TV series could air in October this year. However, it seems that when Stallone abandoned the idea of “Rambo 5,” his would-be co-producers for “Rambo: New Blood” supposedly to be aired on Fox, also decided not to pursue the TV project as well.
With October upon us, it seems unlikely that there would be a premiere season of “Rambo: New Blood” on Fox.
Supposedly a continuation of the franchise
But before the TV project was shelved, the reports were saying that “Rambo: New Blood” would have been a continuation of the series of films about John Rambo.
The plot of “Rambo,” the movie franchise, was based on the work of David Morella. The first movie of the franchise was aired in 1982 with the official title of “First Blood.”
The supposed TV series shall be focusing on telling viewers about John Rambo and his son, Jay, who is a member of the detachment of marines.
Jay shall reportedly be similar to his father and also suffers from a post-traumatic disorder. The elite father-and-son tandem will go on dangerous new adventures with mass shootings, blood, and adrenaline.
However, now that the TV project has been canned or shelved just like “Rambo 5,” it seems that all those exciting plotlines would be put on the backburner until someone decides to make a go of it.
